Delhi Government School Girls Earn US Space Workshop Opportunity Through STEM Excellence

NEW DELHI: Five girls from Delhi government schools have been selected to participate in an international Space Science Workshop at the US Space and Rocket Center in the United States, marking a significant achievement for government school students and a major boost to STEM education in the national capital. The students earned the opportunity after excelling in a highly competitive selection process involving more than 400 applicants from government and government-aided schools across Delhi.

The selected students were recently presented with their travel tickets by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta during a special ceremony. The week-long workshop is scheduled to take place during October and November 2026 and will expose the students to advanced learning in space science, engineering, technology, and innovation.

Rigorous selection process

The selection process was designed to identify students with exceptional aptitude and enthusiasm for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). More than 400 students initially applied for the programme, making the competition highly challenging.

Space

In the first phase, 130 students were shortlisted based on their performance in a STEM aptitude assessment and their Statements of Purpose (SOPs). The evaluation focused on scientific understanding, analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and interest in pursuing STEM education.

The shortlisted candidates then attended a regional workshop where they worked on practical science projects. They presented innovative ideas and demonstrated their technical understanding before a panel of evaluators. After a comprehensive assessment, the top five projects were selected, earning their creators the opportunity to attend the international workshop in the United States.

International exposure through Saksham initiative

The programme is being conducted under the Saksham initiative, a collaborative effort between the Delhi government and Honeywell Technologies. The initiative aims to strengthen STEM education among girls studying in government and government-aided schools while providing them with global learning opportunities.

The selected students will attend hands-on sessions at the US Space and Rocket Center, where they will learn about space exploration, rocket science, engineering principles, teamwork, and scientific research. The programme is designed to inspire young learners to pursue careers in science and technology while enhancing their practical knowledge beyond classroom education.

Officials said such international exposure helps students build confidence, develop critical thinking skills, and understand emerging technologies that are shaping the future.

Expanding STEM education in government schools

The Saksham initiative is part of a broader effort to modernise education infrastructure in government schools and encourage greater participation of girls in STEM fields.

Currently, the programme covers 12 government and government-aided schools. By 2029, it aims to benefit nearly 12,000 students across India. While Delhi will receive the largest share of beneficiaries, the initiative is also being implemented in Pune, Bengaluru, and Gurugram.

As part of the programme, participating schools are being equipped with STEM laboratories, digital learning facilities, smart classrooms, improved sanitation infrastructure, and teacher training programmes. Students also receive awareness sessions on cyber safety, financial literacy, nutrition, and health to support their overall development.

Encouraging girls to dream bigger

Speaking during the event, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the achievement demonstrates the talent and potential of students studying in government schools. She expressed confidence that such opportunities would encourage more girls to explore careers in science, technology, engineering, and research.

Education experts believe initiatives like these play a crucial role in narrowing the gender gap in STEM careers by providing equal opportunities and access to quality scientific education. Exposure to international learning environments can motivate students to pursue higher education and research in emerging scientific fields.

Building future-ready talent

Industry leaders associated with the programme have highlighted that India’s growing technology-driven economy requires a strong pipeline of skilled young professionals. Investments in STEM education, especially for girls from underserved communities, are expected to contribute significantly to the country’s future workforce.

By combining modern infrastructure, experiential learning, and international exposure, the initiative seeks to prepare students for careers in innovation, engineering, artificial intelligence, aerospace, and other advanced technology sectors.

The selection of five Delhi government school girls for the prestigious US Space and Rocket Center workshop represents more than an academic accomplishment.
