JAMMU: The political debate over the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood intensified after Chief Minister Omar Abdullah sharply questioned the Union government over the continued delay in fulfilling its commitment. Addressing a gathering, Abdullah said the Centre should not mistake the patience of the people of Jammu and Kashmir for weakness and warned that prolonged uncertainty could create unnecessary tensions.
Omar Abdullah Raises Strong Concerns
Omar Abdullah said the people of Jammu and Kashmir have shown restraint despite waiting for years for the restoration of statehood. Referring to repeated assurances given by the Centre, he asked when the “appropriate time” for restoring full statehood would finally arrive.
The Chief Minister remarked that his government has continued to work for public welfare despite functioning under the limitations of a Union Territory. However, he said the people deserve clarity and urged the Centre to honour its promise without further delay.
“Don’t Test People’s Patience”
In one of his strongest remarks on the issue, Abdullah questioned whether anyone wanted to “light a fire” in Jammu and Kashmir by continuing to postpone the restoration of statehood. He stressed that the people have remained patient and democratic, but warned that this patience should not be taken for granted.
He said the National Conference had consistently pursued constitutional and democratic methods to seek the restoration of statehood rather than confrontation. According to him, continued uncertainty only weakens public confidence and delays administrative progress.
Statehood Remains a Key Political Demand
The restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood has remained one of the National Conference’s principal political demands since the region was reorganised into two Union Territories in August 2019.
While the Centre has repeatedly indicated that statehood would be restored at an appropriate time after the completion of the democratic process, no official timeline has been announced. The absence of a clear roadmap has become a major political issue in the Union Territory.
National Conference Steps Up Campaign
The National Conference has intensified its campaign by mobilising political leaders, civil society organisations and public representatives in support of restoring statehood.
Party president Farooq Abdullah has invited leaders from several political parties to participate in a protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, aimed at pressing the Centre to fulfil its commitment. Civil society groups in Kashmir have also adopted resolutions supporting the demand, arguing that elected representatives should have full constitutional powers to govern the region effectively.
Government Says Promise Still Stands
The Union government has previously maintained that restoring statehood remains part of its commitment. However, officials have consistently stated that the decision will be taken at an “appropriate time.”

BJP Criticises NC’s Campaign
The Bharatiya Janata Party has criticised the National Conference’s planned protests, describing them as politically motivated. BJP leaders argue that the NC is attempting to divert attention from governance issues by focusing on statehood.
The exchange has further sharpened political differences between the ruling National Conference and the BJP, with both sides presenting contrasting narratives on Jammu and Kashmir’s future governance structure.
Political Significance
The issue of statehood has emerged as one of the most important political questions in Jammu and Kashmir. Supporters believe restoring statehood would strengthen democratic governance, improve administrative efficiency and provide greater decision-making powers to the elected government.
For the National Conference, the issue remains central to its political agenda, while the Centre continues to maintain that the commitment remains intact without announcing a specific timeframe.
As political activity surrounding the demand grows, the coming weeks could witness renewed engagement between regional leaders and the Union government, especially with the planned demonstrations and increasing public support for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood.
