NEW DELHI: Heavy monsoon rainfall has led to the closure of schools in several districts across India, with state governments and local administrations prioritizing the safety of students and staff. Continuous downpours, waterlogging, overflowing rivers, and the threat of landslides have prompted authorities to declare holidays for educational institutions in affected regions, while weather agencies continue to monitor the evolving situation.
Uttarakhand Witnesses Widespread School Closures
Uttarakhand remains among the worst-affected states as relentless rainfall continues to lash the hill districts. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued heavy rainfall alerts for several districts, warning of possible landslides, flash floods, and road blockages.
District administrations in vulnerable areas, including Dehradun, Nainital and other hill districts, announced the suspension of classes in schools as a precautionary measure. Authorities said the decision was taken after reviewing weather forecasts and local conditions to prevent students from travelling during hazardous weather.

Uttar Pradesh Districts Declare Rain Holiday
Heavy rainfall also disrupted normal life in parts of Uttar Pradesh. In Ghaziabad, the district administration ordered the closure of schools up to Class 12 after persistent rain caused waterlogging and traffic disruptions.
The IMD has forecast continued rainfall in several parts of the state, prompting officials to issue advisories urging parents and students to follow only official announcements regarding school operations. Local administrations have indicated that further decisions will depend on weather conditions over the coming days.
Kerala Districts Suspend Classes
Several districts in Kerala have also declared holidays for schools as heavy rain continues to affect normal activities. Authorities cited concerns over flooding, swollen rivers, and the possibility of landslides in hilly regions while announcing temporary closure of educational institutions.
District collectors have been closely monitoring rainfall and issuing district-specific orders based on local conditions. Emergency services have remained on alert, while residents have been advised to avoid travel to vulnerable areas during periods of intense rainfall.
Maharashtra on High Alert
In Maharashtra, heavy rainfall has impacted several districts, especially parts of the Konkan region and western Maharashtra. While not every district declared a holiday, authorities in rain-affected areas continued to review the situation and remained prepared to suspend classes wherever necessary.
Separately, the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences postponed examinations scheduled for July 9 as a precaution due to adverse weather conditions. Officials stated that revised examination dates would be announced later.

According to the India Meteorological Department, active monsoon conditions are expected to persist across several parts of northern and western India. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely in isolated locations, raising concerns over flooding, waterlogging, and transport disruptions.
