9/11 Tribute Takes Strong Turn As FIA-Chicago Calls For Action Against Terrorism

The Federation of Indian Associations (FIA-Chicago) organised a tribute and educational programme commemorating the victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States and remembering victims of terrorist attacks that followed across the world.

The event brought together FIA trustees, executives, directors, delegates, community leaders, media representatives and heads of various organisations. The programme focused on remembering the victims of 9/11 while encouraging greater public awareness and discussion about terrorism and its continuing impact.

Event Begins With National Anthem and 9/11 Documentary

The programme opened with the American National Anthem, followed by the screening of a documentary on the September 11 attacks. The documentary was compiled by FIA-Chicago President Hemant Patel.

FIA Executive Amar Upadhyay subsequently led a moment of silence in memory of the victims of 9/11 and those who lost their lives in terrorist attacks around the world.

According to the press release, the documentary left attendees visibly shocked and deeply reflective. Several participants reportedly said the presentation helped them understand the broader history, scale and continuing consequences of terrorism since 2001.

Attendees Reflect on the Continuing Impact of Terrorism

The programme generated discussions about the need to remember the victims of terrorism beyond commemorative occasions. The organisers said that simply observing 9/11 for one day each year is not sufficient and stressed the importance of understanding what happened and examining the factors that contribute to terrorism.

The press release said attendees expressed sadness for victims, admiration for people who sacrificed their lives and concern over how terrorism and its history are understood by younger generations.

Hemant Patel Calls for Fact-Based Discussion

FIA-Chicago President Hemant Patel said that, in his view, some atrocities and their underlying causes have been hidden, distorted or obscured by propaganda and misinformation.

Patel argued that a comprehensive understanding of terrorism is necessary to effectively address the threat. He also called for open discussion about radicalisation and terrorism, while stating that such discussions should not automatically be treated as Islamophobic or communal.

He further emphasised the need for a fact-based examination of terrorism, including its root causes, financing, ideology, recruitment mechanisms and support networks, alongside practical measures aimed at preventing future attacks.

Community Leaders Urge Political Awareness

Dr. Manish Brahmbhatt appealed to members of the audience to vote wisely. Community leaders Sanjay Vora and Vitthal Desai encouraged attendees to question political candidates about how they would address what they described as Islamist extremism in the United States.

Raja Babu also encouraged participants to independently read religious texts, including the Quran, in the context of discussions surrounding violence and hatred.

President Patel additionally referred attendees to specific Quranic passages and encouraged them to conduct their own research as part of examining the issues discussed during the programme.

FIA Executives Pass Resolution Condemning Terrorism

During the event, FIA executives also passed a resolution condemning terrorism. According to the organisation, the resolution will be forwarded to various government authorities.

The organisers said the documentary presented the root causes of terrorism and possible solutions from President Patel’s perspective. They also encouraged people concerned about the future of America, the wider world and future generations to watch the documentary and engage with the issues it raises.

FIA-Chicago, established in 1980, has served the Indian-American community for more than 45 years. The organisation describes its work as being centred on unity, heritage, service and community.
