NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit West Bengal on June 20 to participate in the Paschimbanga Divas celebrations, combining historical remembrance with a series of development initiatives aimed at boosting agriculture, infrastructure, fisheries and rural connectivity across the state.

The programme, to be held in Hooghly district, will celebrate West Bengal’s rich cultural heritage and its historical journey while also serving as a platform for major welfare announcements benefiting millions of people.

The event carries special significance as June 20 marks an important date associated with the historic 1947 resolution that eventually paved the way for the formation of West Bengal as part of independent India.

Theme: Heritage, Harmony and Development

This year’s celebration is centred around the theme “West Bengal: Heritage, Harmony and Development.”

The programme will showcase Bengal’s contributions to India’s cultural, literary and freedom movement legacy while highlighting ongoing efforts to accelerate economic development in the state.

Government officials have indicated that the Prime Minister’s visit will not only commemorate history but also unveil initiatives designed to improve the lives of farmers, fishermen, rural communities and small entrepreneurs.

PM-Kisan Funds to Reach Millions of Farmers

One of the biggest announcements during the event will be the release of the 23rd instalment of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-Kisan) scheme.

Across the country, more than ₹18,880 crore will be transferred directly to over 9.44 crore farmers.

In West Bengal alone, over 45 lakh beneficiaries are expected to receive more than ₹900 crore through direct benefit transfers.

The latest disbursement will further increase the cumulative PM-Kisan assistance received by farmers in the state over the past several years.

Four Major Agriculture Initiatives to be Launched

The Prime Minister will also launch several programmes aimed at modernising agriculture.

Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY)

The crop insurance programme is expected to cover nearly 50 lakh farmers and around 14 lakh hectares of farmland during the 2026-27 agricultural cycle.

The insured value is estimated at approximately ₹28,140 crore.

AgriStack Digital Platform

Under the Digital Agriculture Mission, AgriStack will integrate various farmer services onto a single digital platform.

The system will streamline access to:

  • Fertiliser subsidies
  • Kisan Credit Cards
  • Direct Benefit Transfers
  • Minimum Support Price procurement services
  • Agricultural records

Natural Farming Mission

The government will establish 346 natural farming clusters covering approximately 17,300 hectares.

The initiative aims to encourage chemical-free cultivation and sustainable farming practices.

Pradhan Mantri Dhan-Dhaanya Krishi Yojana

The programme will initially focus on four districts:

  • Purulia
  • Darjeeling
  • Alipurduar
  • Jhargram

The scheme seeks to improve irrigation, crop diversification and rural economic growth.

Railway and Road Infrastructure Projects

Infrastructure development will also be a major component of the celebrations.

Projects worth around ₹590 crore will either be inaugurated or have their foundation stones laid.

Key projects include:

  • Sankrail-Santragachi Link railway line
  • A new 300-bed Divisional Railway Hospital in Howrah
  • A Road Over Bridge in Purba Medinipur
  • Forty-nine rural road projects under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana

These initiatives are expected to improve transportation networks and strengthen connectivity in several districts.

Fisheries and Livestock Sector to Get a Boost

The Prime Minister will inaugurate multiple fisheries infrastructure projects.

These include:

  • Modernisation of the Fraserganj Fishing Harbour
  • A new fish market in Birbhum district

Additionally, eastern India’s first Regional Semen Production Laboratory and Goat Semen Bank will be inaugurated in Nadia district.

The facility is expected to improve scientific breeding and productivity in the livestock sector.

Historical Importance of Paschimbanga Divas

Paschimbanga Divas has gained increasing prominence in recent years. June 20 is linked to the events surrounding the Partition era when a resolution was adopted in 1947 that ultimately contributed to the creation of West Bengal within independent India.

The celebrations are intended to honour the contributions of freedom fighters, social reformers, artists, writers and cultural icons who shaped Bengal’s identity over generations.

The event also seeks to reinforce the state’s role in India’s development journey. The Centre appears to be using Paschimbanga Divas as more than a commemorative event. By combining history with farmer welfare, digital agriculture, infrastructure investments and rural development, the government is attempting to position West Bengal as a key growth engine for eastern India.

The emphasis on direct benefit transfers and agricultural modernisation also reflects a broader strategy of linking welfare programmes with long-term economic development.
