CHENNAI: In a significant anti-smuggling operation, officers of the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of Chennai Customs intercepted an Indian male passenger at Chennai’s international airport after receiving specific intelligence inputs regarding suspicious activity. The operation was carried out on June 18, 2026, at Chennai Anna International Airport.
According to officials, the passenger had travelled from Bangkok and reached Chennai via Singapore aboard a Scoot Airlines flight. Customs authorities subjected the passenger’s baggage to a detailed examination after identifying potential red flags during routine surveillance and intelligence assessment.
During the inspection, officers discovered five airtight packets carefully hidden inside food products placed in the checked-in baggage. Upon opening the packets, authorities found green flowering and fruiting tops weighing approximately 4.862 kilograms, which are suspected to be illicit narcotic substances. The seized material has been sent for further examination and verification.

Passenger Admitted Carrying Contraband for Money
During preliminary questioning, the passenger reportedly admitted that he was transporting the contraband in exchange for financial compensation. Based on the available evidence and the confession during initial inquiry, customs authorities arrested him under relevant provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985.
Following the arrest, the accused was produced before a Judicial Magistrate and subsequently remanded as per legal procedures. Officials have launched a broader investigation to identify the source, intended recipients and possible links to an international drug trafficking network.
Growing Concern Over International Drug Smuggling Routes
The case once again highlights the increasing use of international transit routes by drug trafficking syndicates. Smugglers often attempt to evade detection by concealing prohibited substances inside everyday items such as food packets, clothing or personal belongings.
Authorities have intensified surveillance at major airports across India, particularly on routes originating from regions that have witnessed a rise in narcotics-related activities.
Officials believe intelligence-led operations remain one of the most effective tools in combating cross-border drug trafficking and dismantling organised smuggling networks.
Customs officials have reiterated that passengers involved in transporting illegal substances, regardless of whether they are couriers or principal operators, will face strict action under Indian law.
The investigation is continuing, and authorities have not ruled out the possibility of additional arrests as more information emerges from the seized materials and digital evidence.
