The Shri Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee (BKTC) has launched a formal inquiry into allegations concerning the alleged misuse and misappropriation of donations and offerings made by devotees at Badrinath Dham. The decision comes after claims circulating on social media and complaints from certain organisations triggered public concern over the handling of temple funds.

BKTC Chairman Hemant Dwivedi announced that an independent inquiry committee has been constituted to conduct a fair and fact-based investigation into the allegations. According to the committee, the objective is to establish the truth while ensuring complete transparency in the administration of one of India’s most revered pilgrimage centres.

Committee Promises Fair and Transparent Investigation

The temple committee stated that the inquiry panel will examine all relevant records, financial procedures and operational practices linked to donations and offerings received at the shrine. Officials have maintained that no conclusions should be drawn until the investigation is completed.

BKTC leadership stressed that maintaining the faith of millions of devotees remains the highest priority. The committee has assured pilgrims that if any irregularities are found during the inquiry, appropriate administrative and legal action will be initiated against those responsible.

The administration also appealed to the public to avoid spreading unverified information while the investigation is underway, emphasizing that facts will emerge only after a comprehensive review of the available evidence.

Social Media Allegations Trigger Official Response

The inquiry follows allegations shared on social media claiming that donations and offerings made by devotees were not being handled properly. The claims generated widespread discussion and prompted demands from several groups for greater accountability in the management of temple finances.

BKTC

Responding to the growing concerns, the BKTC decided to initiate an official probe rather than dismiss the allegations outright. Officials said an impartial investigation would help determine whether the claims have any factual basis and would also strengthen public confidence in the temple administration.

Temple authorities reiterated that transparency is essential for institutions that receive contributions from millions of devotees each year.

Heightened Vigilance Ordered Across BKTC Temples

Alongside the inquiry, the BKTC has also directed officials managing donations and offerings at Badrinath, Kedarnath and other temples under its administration to exercise greater vigilance.

A recent administrative order instructs personnel working at donation counting centres, treasury departments, accounts sections, guest houses and puja booking counters to strictly follow financial procedures. The directive calls for transparent accounting, secure handling of cash and donated materials, and continuous monitoring of all transactions.

Officials have been warned that negligence or any financial irregularity in handling devotees’ offerings will invite strict disciplinary action.

Background of Earlier Financial Concerns

The latest inquiry comes amid heightened public sensitivity over financial accountability at major religious institutions. Earlier this year, the BKTC had also ordered an investigation into separate allegations concerning the alleged use of temple funds for hospitality arrangements linked to certain political visitors after questions were raised through RTI disclosures. Those allegations remain distinct from the present inquiry but have increased scrutiny over the committee’s financial management practices.

The recent controversy has further reinforced calls from devotees and civil society groups for stronger financial oversight, transparent accounting systems and periodic audits of temple donations.

Temple Committee Seeks to Protect Devotee Confidence

The BKTC has emphasized that the reputation of Badrinath Dham is built on the faith of millions of pilgrims who visit the shrine every year during the Char Dham Yatra. Committee officials said safeguarding devotees’ trust is as important as maintaining the religious and cultural significance of the temple.

Authorities believe that conducting a transparent inquiry will help dispel rumours if the allegations prove unfounded or identify shortcomings if irregularities are discovered. The committee has assured that the findings of the investigation will be handled in accordance with established administrative procedures.

With the Char Dham pilgrimage continuing to attract large numbers of visitors, officials have reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring that every donation received from devotees is managed responsibly and with complete accountability. The outcome of the inquiry is expected to determine whether additional reforms or safeguards are required to strengthen financial governance at one of India’s most prominent pilgrimage destinations.
