Government Tightens Grip on Digital Piracy
The Central Government has issued a stern notice to Telegram, directing the messaging platform to take immediate steps against the widespread circulation of pirated films, web series, and other copyrighted audio-visual content. The notice gives the platform 15 days to strengthen its content moderation systems and submit a detailed Action Taken Report outlining the measures adopted to curb piracy.
According to official sources, the move comes after repeated concerns from the entertainment industry regarding the illegal distribution of movies and OTT content through Telegram channels and groups. Authorities believe such activities have caused significant financial losses to producers, distributors, broadcasters, and streaming platforms.
Notice Calls for Immediate Compliance
In its communication to Telegram, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting instructed the platform to improve systems for detecting, reporting, disabling access to, and removing pirated content. The government has also sought details of Telegram’s grievance redressal mechanism available for producers, OTT platforms, broadcasters, and law-enforcement agencies.
