India’s Digital Revolution Surges as 12 Years of DPI Transform Governance

Digital Public Infrastructure Reshapes Governance

India’s digital transformation has entered a decisive phase, with Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) increasingly becoming the backbone of governance, public services and economic activity. According to a PIB backgrounder posted on August 12, 2026, the country’s digital ecosystem has expanded significantly over the past 12 years, connecting citizens, governments and institutions through integrated platforms.

The transformation has reduced dependence on paperwork and physical government offices while making several services faster, more accessible and more transparent. The digital economy now contributes an estimated 12–14% of India’s GDP and is projected to reach 20% over the next decade, highlighting the growing economic importance of technology and digital infrastructure.

Electronics Manufacturing Delivers Massive Growth

India’s digital rise has been accompanied by a sharp expansion in electronics manufacturing. Government initiatives such as the Production Linked Incentive scheme, Electronics Components Manufacturing Scheme, India Semiconductor Mission and Modified Electronics Manufacturing Clusters have strengthened domestic production.

Electronics production increased nearly sevenfold, rising from ₹1.9 lakh crore in 2014–15 to ₹13.11 lakh crore in 2025–26. Electronics exports also climbed from ₹38,000 crore to ₹4.24 lakh crore during the same period.

Electronic goods have now become India’s third-largest export category, with exports reaching $47.96 billion in FY 2025–26. The manufacturing ecosystem supports nearly 25 lakh jobs, with women accounting for about 30% of the workforce.

Semiconductor Push Strengthens India’s Technology Ambitions

India is also accelerating efforts to build a domestic semiconductor ecosystem. The Union Cabinet has approved Semicon 2.0 with an outlay of ₹1.27 lakh crore.

Under India Semiconductor Mission 1.0, 12 semiconductor units worth ₹1.64 lakh crore have been approved. Three facilities have already entered commercial production, while another is expected to begin operations this year, according to the PIB backgrounder.

Mobile Manufacturing Becomes Export Powerhouse

Mobile phones have emerged as one of the strongest drivers of India’s electronics growth. India is now described as the world’s second-largest mobile phone manufacturer.

Mobile phone production surged from ₹18,000 crore in 2014–15 to ₹6.27 lakh crore in 2025–26. Exports recorded an even more dramatic rise, climbing from ₹1,500 crore to ₹2.59 lakh crore.

The mobile manufacturing sector now supports around 12 lakh jobs, with women making up nearly 70% of the workforce. Mobile phones also moved from being the 153rd-largest export item in FY 2014–15 to India’s largest export product in FY 2025–26.

5G and Internet Connectivity Expand Across India

Telecommunications infrastructure has witnessed major expansion. Telephone connections increased from 93.3 crore in 2014 to more than 134.8 crore by June 2026, while tele-density rose from 75.23% to 94.31%.

Internet subscribers have more than quadrupled, increasing from 25.15 crore in 2014 to over 109.2 crore by March 2026. At the same time, wireless data costs fell dramatically from ₹308 per GB in 2014 to ₹7.51 per GB in 2026.

The nationwide 5G rollout has also gathered pace. Services are now available in 99.9% of districts across states and Union Territories, with 5.63 lakh 5G base stations recorded in June 2026.

UPI Drives India’s Digital Payments Revolution

India’s Unified Payments Interface has become a defining feature of the country’s digital economy. UPI accounted for nearly half of global real-time payment transaction volume and processed 24,161.69 crore transactions worth ₹314.23 lakh crore during FY 2025–26.

The platform serves more than 55.49 crore individuals and 6.5 crore merchants, connecting 731 banks. UPI accounted for 85% of India’s digital payment transactions by volume during FY 2025–26.

The payment system has also expanded internationally, with UPI accepted in 11 foreign countries, including Singapore, the UAE, France and Mauritius.

DigiLocker, Aadhaar and UMANG Deepen E-Governance

Digital governance platforms have dramatically expanded their reach. DigiLocker had more than 72 crore registered users by July 31, 2026, with over 934 crore documents issued.

UMANG has grown from 166 services in 2017 to 2,585 services by July 2026, while transactions crossed 798 crore. Aadhaar generation has surpassed 145 crore, creating a large-scale digital identity infrastructure.

Common Service Centres are also providing citizens with physical access points for government digital services, with more than 5.16 lakh centres functional as of June 2026.

Digital Education and Skills Gain Momentum

Technology is also transforming education and employment. DIKSHA has 2.35 crore registered users, while SWAYAM offers more than 20,000 courses and has recorded over 6.5 crore enrollments.

More than 33.74 crore APAAR IDs had been generated by June 2026, providing students with digital academic identities for storing and verifying educational records.

India’s digital-skilling ecosystem is expanding as well. FutureSkills PRIME has more than 34 lakh registered users, while the Skill India Digital Hub has recorded over 20.10 million registrations and generated more than one million opportunities.

India Eyes 6G and AI-Led Digital Future

The government’s Bharat 6G Vision aims to position India among global leaders in sixth-generation technology by 2030, focusing on indigenous research, intellectual property, standards and next-generation innovation.

The IndiaAI Mission is simultaneously supporting AI education, infrastructure and responsible adoption across schools, higher education and professional training.

The overall digital transformation is positioning technology as a major enabler of governance, economic opportunity and social development. With expanding connectivity, digital payments, AI, electronics manufacturing and citizen-centric platforms, India is building an increasingly interconnected digital ecosystem aligned with the broader vision of a digitally empowered and Viksit Bharat.
