NEW DELHI: Delhi witnessed high drama on Monday as police used tear gas to disperse protesters participating in the “Chalo Sansad” march, preventing them from advancing towards Parliament during the opening day of the Monsoon Session. The demonstration, organised by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), drew thousands of students, youth, activists and supporters to Jantar Mantar, turning the national capital into the centre of a major protest demanding reforms in the country’s education and examination systems.
The march was held days after activist Sonam Wangchuk’s hunger strike brought renewed attention to student-related issues, particularly repeated examination paper leaks and concerns over transparency in recruitment and competitive examinations. Although Wangchuk ended his fast due to health concerns, protest organisers decided to continue the movement, urging citizens to assemble in Delhi for the “Chalo Sansad” campaign.
Police Stop Protesters Near Parliament
Heavy security arrangements were in place across central Delhi ahead of the protest. Delhi Police had deployed hundreds of personnel around Jantar Mantar, Parliament Street and other sensitive locations while barricades were erected to prevent demonstrators from marching towards Parliament.
As protesters attempted to move beyond the designated protest site, police stopped them at multiple barricades. The situation became tense when some demonstrators tried to push through the security cordons. Police responded by using tear gas to disperse the crowd and restore order.
Several protesters alleged that they were manhandled during the confrontation, while some claimed they were briefly detained. Police maintained that the force used was necessary to enforce restrictions imposed around Parliament during the Monsoon Session and to ensure public safety.
Thousands Participate in ‘Chalo Sansad’ Rally
The protest witnessed participation from students preparing for government jobs, unemployed youth, parents and members of various civil society groups. Demonstrators carried banners and placards demanding accountability for examination paper leaks and recruitment delays.
Many participants raised slogans calling for comprehensive reforms in India’s examination process, stricter punishment for those involved in paper leak scandals and greater transparency in recruitment agencies. Protesters said repeated irregularities had shattered the confidence of millions of students who spend years preparing for competitive examinations.
The large turnout reflected growing frustration among young people over employment opportunities and examination-related controversies that have surfaced across the country in recent years.
Movement Gains Momentum After Sonam Wangchuk’s Hunger Strike
The latest protest was significantly influenced by the hunger strike launched by environmentalist and education reform advocate Sonam Wangchuk. His fast attracted nationwide attention and sparked discussions about the future of India’s education system and the need to protect students from repeated examination controversies.
Although Wangchuk ended his hunger strike after his health deteriorated, organisers maintained that the broader campaign would continue until concrete assurances were received from the government.
The movement has also gained support from several social activists, educators and public figures who believe that reforms are necessary to restore public trust in the examination system.
Demands Raised by Protesters
Protesters submitted a list of demands that included stronger safeguards against paper leaks, faster investigation into examination-related fraud, transparent recruitment procedures and greater accountability for officials responsible for lapses.
Participants also sought improved protection for students appearing in competitive examinations and called for timely recruitment to vacant government posts.
Many speakers at the rally argued that repeated examination cancellations have created financial and emotional hardships for candidates who spend years preparing for government jobs.
Government Open to Dialogue
Even as protests continued on the streets, indications emerged that the Centre was willing to engage with movement representatives. Organisers confirmed that senior members of the Cockroach Janta Party were expected to meet Union Minister and BJP president J.P. Nadda to discuss their concerns.

The development came after CJP founder Abhijit Dipke ended his own hunger strike, expressing hope that discussions with the government could produce a positive outcome.
Movement leaders, however, said public protests would continue until meaningful action was taken on their demands.
Security Tightened Across Central Delhi
Authorities maintained a tight security blanket across central Delhi throughout the day. Traffic restrictions were imposed on several roads leading to Parliament, while commuters faced diversions in many parts of the city.
Police continued monitoring the situation until late evening as protesters gradually dispersed after repeated appeals by authorities.
Despite occasional confrontations, the overall protest remained largely peaceful, with organisers urging participants to avoid violence and maintain discipline.
What Lies Ahead
The “Chalo Sansad” march has become one of the most significant youth-led protests in recent months, highlighting widespread dissatisfaction over examination irregularities and employment concerns. The use of tear gas by Delhi Police has further intensified debate over the handling of peaceful demonstrations and the government’s response to student demands.
With talks expected between protest leaders and government representatives, attention will now focus on whether negotiations lead to concrete reforms. For thousands of students and young job aspirants who participated in the rally, the movement represents more than a single protest—it reflects a growing demand for fairness, transparency and accountability in India’s education and recruitment systems.
