India’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi met Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman in Dhaka on Monday, in a significant diplomatic engagement taking place amid renewed tensions between New Delhi and Dhaka.
The meeting, held at the Bangladesh Secretariat, marked Trivedi’s first meeting with Tarique Rahman since taking charge as India’s envoy to Bangladesh. The talks come at a sensitive moment in bilateral relations, particularly following renewed disagreements over former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her political activities from New Delhi.
According to reports, the meeting was described as a courtesy call, while the details of the discussions were not officially disclosed by either side. However, the Indian High Commission said the envoy conveyed greetings to the Bangladesh prime minister and expressed New Delhi’s interest in working positively and constructively with the Bangladeshi government and its people.
The engagement is being closely watched because it comes against the backdrop of uncertainty over Tarique Rahman’s possible visit to New Delhi for the upcoming BRICS summit.
First Meeting Between Trivedi and Tarique Rahman
Trivedi and Tarique Rahman met at the Bangladesh Secretariat around noon on Monday. Photographs of the meeting were released by both the Bangladeshi prime minister’s office and the Indian mission in Dhaka.
The meeting was particularly significant because Trivedi was appointed India’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh earlier this year, making this his first direct interaction with the Bangladeshi prime minister.
The Indian envoy has repeatedly emphasized the importance of dialogue in addressing differences between the two neighbouring countries. Ahead of his meeting with Tarique Rahman, Trivedi had said that there was no bilateral issue that could not be resolved through discussions.
“Dialogue” has therefore emerged as a key theme in India’s current diplomatic outreach to Dhaka, with both sides facing several complicated political and security issues.
Trivedi also met Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman on Sunday, a day before his meeting with the prime minister.
Sheikh Hasina Issue Adds Pressure to Bilateral Ties
The meeting takes place shortly after Sheikh Hasina’s recent political engagement from New Delhi, which has again complicated India-Bangladesh relations.
Hasina was removed from power following the political upheaval in Bangladesh in August 2024 and subsequently travelled to New Delhi. Her continued presence in Delhi has remained a contentious issue between the two countries.
Dhaka has sought her extradition, while New Delhi has maintained that any request would be considered according to its legal procedures. The issue has become even more sensitive following Hasina’s recent address to the media from Delhi.
Bangladesh has strongly objected to Hasina being allowed to engage in political activities while in New Delhi. New Delhi, however, has said that the Indian government had no role in organizing her recent media interaction and does not endorse statements made at that event.
The disagreement has created fresh diplomatic pressure at a time when both countries have been attempting to stabilize relations.
Tarique’s India Visit and BRICS Summit Uncertainty
Another important issue surrounding the meeting is Tarique Rahman’s possible visit to New Delhi for the BRICS summit scheduled in September.

Earlier reports suggested that the recent tensions could affect the Bangladesh prime minister’s participation in the summit in New Delhi. However, Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman later said that a final decision on Tarique Rahman’s participation had not yet been made.
The possibility of a visit has diplomatic significance because it could provide an opportunity for direct engagement between the leadership of India and Bangladesh.
Trivedi had already expressed optimism that a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Tarique Rahman could help resolve several outstanding bilateral concerns.
The Indian envoy said before his meeting with the Bangladeshi prime minister that when the leaders of two countries meet, many problems can be addressed through direct discussion.
Whether the Monday meeting has cleared the way for a possible India visit by Tarique Rahman remains unclear.
Push for Constructive Engagement
Despite the recent disagreements, India appears keen to maintain diplomatic engagement with Bangladesh.
Following his meeting with Tarique Rahman, Trivedi reiterated the importance of cooperation and dialogue. He also highlighted the broader relationship between the people of the two countries, suggesting that bilateral ties should not be defined solely by individual disputes.
Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has also called for a conducive environment to improve relations with India. Reuters reported that Rahman emphasized the need for conditions that could help reset bilateral ties during his first meeting with the Indian envoy.
The two countries share a long land border and have extensive historical, cultural, economic and people-to-people connections. Cooperation on trade, connectivity, water resources, border management and regional security remains important for both sides.
Relations had deteriorated considerably during the interim government period that followed Hasina’s departure. Issues involving minority security, political instability and cross-border concerns contributed to growing distrust.
The formation of the Tarique Rahman-led government, however, has raised hopes in New Delhi and Dhaka that bilateral ties could gradually move toward a more stable phase.
Monday’s meeting therefore carries significance beyond a routine diplomatic courtesy call. It comes at a moment when India and Bangladesh are attempting to manage sensitive disagreements while keeping communication channels open.
The immediate challenges—including the Sheikh Hasina issue and uncertainty over high-level visits—remain unresolved. Yet the decision by both sides to continue direct engagement indicates that diplomacy remains central to managing the relationship.
For India and Bangladesh, the coming weeks could prove crucial. A possible Modi-Rahman meeting, particularly around the BRICS summit, could provide an important platform for addressing differences and rebuilding confidence between the two neighbours.
