The United States Geological Survey (USGS) recorded the earthquake at magnitude 7.4, while Colombia’s National Unit for Disaster Risk Management reported a magnitude of 6.6. The difference reflects variations in preliminary measurements by different seismic monitoring agencies. Reuters reported that Colombia’s disaster management agency placed the depth at around 79 kilometres, while the USGS later reported a deeper measurement of about 107 kilometres.
Strong Earthquake Strikes Chocó on Colombia’s Pacific Coast
The earthquake struck in the morning, with the epicentre located near San José del Palmar in Chocó, according to Colombian authorities. The region, located far from Bogotá, experienced some of the strongest effects, with reports of damaged buildings and injuries.
