NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday paid rich tributes to Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee on the occasion of Paschimbanga Divas, stating that his contribution in ensuring West Bengal remained an integral part of India was invaluable. “West Bengal has shaped the history of India through its contributions in literature, music, art, spirituality, science, trade, business and social reforms,” said PM Narendra Modi

In his message, PM Modi said Paschimbanga Divas is a day to honour Bengal’s historic legacy and recognise the people whose efforts shaped the state’s future during one of the most crucial periods in Indian history. “West Bengal has enriched the national spirit of India in countless ways through its remarkable contributions across generations,” PM Narendra Modi PM Modi said while extending his greetings to the people of the state.

Bengal’s Legacy Beyond Borders

The Prime Minister highlighted that West Bengal has made immense contributions in fields such as literature, music, spirituality, science, education, trade and social reform. He said the state’s influence extends far beyond geographical boundaries and continues to inspire generations across India.

According to PM Modi, Bengal has been home to thinkers, reformers, artists and leaders whose ideas have significantly contributed to India’s growth and identity.

He said the occasion serves as a reminder of Bengal’s enduring spirit and its pivotal role in strengthening the nation.

Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee’s Historic Contribution

PM Modi placed special emphasis on the historical significance of June 20 and the role played by Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee during the partition era.

He stated that June 20 marked a defining chapter in history when decisive efforts helped ensure that West Bengal remained part of independent India. “The role of Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee was invaluable in the same,” the Prime Minister said.

Dr. Mukherjee emerged as one of the leading voices during the tumultuous period preceding India’s independence. His efforts and political interventions are widely acknowledged as instrumental in safeguarding the interests of Bengali Hindus and securing the inclusion of West Bengal within the Indian Union.

The date commemorates an important decision taken by members of the Bengal Legislative Assembly in 1947, which eventually led to the creation of West Bengal as a state within independent India.

Celebrating 125 Years of Dr. Mukherjee

The Prime Minister also noted that 2026 marks the 125th birth anniversary year of Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee. He said the anniversary provides an opportunity for the country to remember and honour the leader’s contributions to nation-building and his vision for a strong and united India.

Dr. Mukherjee was a distinguished educationist, former Union Minister and founder of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, which later became the ideological predecessor of the Bharatiya Janata Party. His legacy continues to influence contemporary political discourse and remains deeply connected to West Bengal’s history.

Centre Reaffirms Commitment to Bengal’s Development

PM Modi also reiterated the Central Government’s commitment to working alongside the West Bengal government for the welfare and progress of the state.

He said the Centre remains dedicated to fulfilling the aspirations of Bengal’s people and ensuring inclusive development across all sectors. “The Central Government will work with the West Bengal Government to fulfil the dreams and aspirations of the people,” he said.

The Prime Minister concluded by praying for the prosperity, peace and continued progress of West Bengal and its citizens.
