KOLKATA: At least three workers have died and several people have been injured after the roof of an under-construction three-storey warehouse collapsed in Kolkata’s Taratala area on Wednesday afternoon. Rescue teams have already pulled out 21 workers alive, while authorities fear that 12 to 18 more people may still be trapped beneath the debris as operations continue.
Tragedy Strikes During Construction Work
The accident occurred at an under-construction warehouse located on Transport Depot Road near Brace Bridge in southwest Kolkata. Dozens of labourers were reportedly present at the site when a large portion of the concrete roof suddenly gave way, bringing down heavy iron beams and construction materials.
Eyewitnesses described hearing a loud crashing sound before dust engulfed the entire area. Local residents immediately rushed to the site and began preliminary rescue efforts even before emergency teams arrived.
Death Toll Rises as Rescue Continues
Officials have confirmed that three workers lost their lives in the collapse. Meanwhile, 11 injured workers have been admitted to hospitals for treatment, some of whom are reportedly in critical condition. Over 20 people have already been rescued from the rubble.
Authorities have not yet released the identities of the deceased, as efforts are underway to inform their families first. Rescue personnel say there remains a possibility that more workers are trapped beneath multiple layers of concrete and steel.
Massive Multi-Agency Rescue Operation
A large-scale emergency response was launched immediately after the incident.
Teams involved in the operation include:
- Kolkata Police
- Fire and Emergency Services
- National Disaster Response Force (NDRF)
- State Disaster Management Group
- Civil Defence personnel
- Indian Army units assisting with specialised equipment
Heavy cranes, gas cutters and earth-moving machinery have been deployed to remove debris carefully without causing further collapses. Rescue workers are also using sniffer dogs and advanced detection equipment to locate survivors.
Officials said workers trapped beneath the rubble were heard calling for help during the early hours of the operation, giving rescuers hope that more lives could still be saved.
Around 50 Workers Were Reportedly Present
Preliminary reports suggest that nearly 50 workers were at the construction site when the collapse occurred. However, authorities are still verifying attendance records and contractor details to determine the exact number of labourers present.
Several rescued workers were shifted to the Trauma Care Centre at SSKM Hospital for emergency treatment. Medical teams have been placed on alert as more victims may be brought in.
Questions Raised Over Construction Safety
The incident has once again raised serious concerns about construction safety standards and regulatory oversight.
Initial assessments indicate that structural failure may have triggered the collapse, though officials have not ruled out other factors. Investigators will examine:
- Quality of construction materials
- Structural design approvals
- Compliance with building regulations
- Safety measures adopted by contractors
- Supervision during construction work
Local residents alleged that construction activities had been ongoing at the site for nearly a year. Some also questioned whether all necessary safety clearances had been obtained.
Government Opens Helplines
Authorities have opened emergency control rooms to assist families searching for missing workers.
The helpline numbers released are:
- 1070
- 8697981070
- 033-22143526
- 033-22535185
Senior ministers and civic officials have also visited the site to monitor rescue operations and coordinate emergency response efforts.
Kolkata’s Infrastructure Safety Under Scrutiny Again
The latest tragedy has renewed concerns about infrastructure safety in Kolkata, a city that has witnessed several construction-related accidents over the years.
Experts say India’s rapidly expanding urban infrastructure projects require stricter monitoring, independent structural audits and stronger accountability mechanisms to protect workers.
As rescue teams continue their painstaking operation in Taratala, anxious family members remain gathered outside hospitals and the accident site, waiting for news about their loved ones while hopes remain alive for those still trapped beneath the rubble.
