VISHAKHAPATNAM: A major industrial accident at the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant in Andhra Pradesh on Monday claimed the lives of at least eight workers and left several others seriously injured after a ladle carrying molten metal reportedly collapsed inside the facility. The incident occurred in the Steel Melting Shop (SMS)-I unit of the plant, triggering panic among workers and prompting an immediate emergency response.
According to preliminary reports, a ladle containing extremely hot liquid metal suddenly fell to the ground while being transported within the plant. The impact caused the molten material to spill across the work area, engulfing workers who were nearby. Due to the intense heat of the metal, the victims suffered severe burn injuries, and several workers died at the spot.
“Deeply saddened by the tragic accident at the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant. My heartfelt condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones. I pray for the speedy recovery of those injured. Authorities are extending all possible support to the affected families. An ex-gratia of ₹2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) will be provided to the next of kin of each deceased, while the injured will receive ₹50,000,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi said.
In his message, the Prime Minister Modi expressed grief over the loss of lives in the industrial accident, conveyed sympathy to the bereaved families, wished a swift recovery for the injured, and announced financial assistance from the PMNRF for both the families of those killed and workers injured in the mishap.
Officials said that six other workers sustained serious injuries in the accident and were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. Medical teams have been placed on alert as authorities continue to monitor the condition of the injured. Rescue and relief operations were launched immediately after the mishap, with emergency personnel working to secure the affected section of the plant.
The Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, operated by Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited, is one of India’s largest integrated steel manufacturing facilities. The accident has once again raised concerns about industrial safety standards in heavy manufacturing units, particularly in operations involving molten metal and high-temperature equipment.
Authorities have begun an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident. Initial indications suggest a possible mechanical failure involving the ladle handling system, though officials have not yet released a final assessment. Technical experts and safety teams are expected to examine whether equipment malfunction, maintenance issues, or operational lapses contributed to the tragedy.
The incident has drawn attention because similar accidents involving molten steel handling equipment have occurred in the past at the steel plant.
