Vietnamese authorities have detained the captain of a tourist speedboat following a devastating accident that claimed the lives of 15 Indian tourists near the popular island destination of Phu Quoc. The move comes as investigators examine whether violations of maritime safety regulations contributed to one of the country’s deadliest tourist boating disasters involving foreign visitors.

Captain Taken Into Custody

Police confirmed that the speedboat captain was taken into custody after a preliminary investigation found potential breaches of inland waterway transport safety rules. Authorities have opened a criminal investigation to determine whether negligence or failure to comply with safety requirements played a role in the tragedy.

Officials stated that investigators are reviewing navigation records, weather conditions, operational procedures, and witness testimonies. The captain could face legal action if evidence establishes that safety regulations were ignored or violated before or during the voyage.

The Fatal Incident

The accident occurred near Hon May Rut Ngoai Island, close to Vietnam’s famous Phu Quoc Island, a rapidly growing destination for international tourists.

According to Vietnamese authorities, the speedboat was carrying 32 Indian tourists along with four Vietnamese crew members. The vessel overturned shortly after departing the island during the return journey to the mainland.

The accident happened only a short distance from shore, but rescue operations were complicated by rough sea conditions, making it difficult for emergency teams to reach passengers quickly.

15 Indian Tourists Lose Their Lives

The tragedy claimed the lives of 15 Indian nationals, while several others suffered injuries. Rescue teams, local fishermen, and nearby watercraft joined efforts to save passengers trapped in the water.

Most survivors were rescued within hours of the accident, although at least one injured passenger reportedly remains in critical condition in Vietnam. Many of the surviving tourists have since returned to India following medical treatment and assistance from authorities.

Rescue Operation Faced Difficult Conditions

Emergency response teams launched an extensive rescue mission immediately after receiving distress calls.

Vietnamese rescue personnel, supported by local boats and jet skis, searched the surrounding waters for survivors. Witnesses described rough waves and changing weather conditions that complicated rescue efforts.

Officials said the prompt response by nearby boats helped prevent an even greater loss of life. Several passengers were pulled from the sea before emergency teams reached the scene.

Safety Practices Under Scrutiny

The investigation is focusing heavily on compliance with maritime safety procedures.

Authorities are examining whether passengers received adequate safety instructions before departure and whether sufficient precautions were taken considering sea conditions. Reports indicate that although life jackets were available and passengers had been advised to wear them, not everyone was wearing one when the vessel capsized.

Investigators are also reviewing the boat’s operating licence, maintenance history, crew qualifications, and adherence to Vietnam’s inland waterway transport regulations.

Support for Victims’ Families

The Indian Embassy in Vietnam has been working closely with Vietnamese authorities to assist affected families.

Officials have initiated the repatriation process for the victims’ mortal remains, coordinating documentation, transportation, and other necessary formalities to ensure the deceased are returned to their families in India as quickly as possible.

Indian diplomatic officials have also been assisting injured survivors and maintaining communication with relatives throughout the recovery process.

Popular Tourist Destination Shocked

Phu Quoc has become one of Southeast Asia’s most visited island destinations, attracting a growing number of Indian tourists due to expanded flight connectivity and simplified travel arrangements.

Tourism officials estimate that hundreds of thousands of Indian travellers visited Vietnam last year, making India one of the country’s fastest-growing international tourism markets. The latest tragedy has raised fresh concerns over marine tourism safety standards in the region.

Investigation Continues

Vietnamese authorities have assured both domestic and international audiences that the investigation will be thorough and transparent.

Officials are expected to determine whether weather conditions alone caused the accident or whether operational failures, negligence, or regulatory violations contributed to the capsizing.

The findings could lead to stricter enforcement of maritime safety regulations for tourist vessels operating around Vietnam’s popular island destinations.

As families mourn the loss of their loved ones, the tragedy has highlighted the importance of rigorous safety measures, proper emergency preparedness, and strict compliance with navigation rules to protect tourists visiting coastal destinations worldwide.
