JODHPUR: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated the newly built terminal at Jodhpur Airport in Rajasthan and officially launched the revamped UDAN (Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik) Scheme, marking a significant step in the Centre’s efforts to modernise aviation infrastructure and improve regional air connectivity across the country. The twin initiatives are expected to enhance passenger convenience while creating fresh opportunities for tourism, business, and employment.
A Modern Terminal for a Growing Aviation Hub
The newly inaugurated terminal has been developed at an estimated cost of ₹480 crore and spans more than 23,000 square metres. Designed to accommodate nearly 20 lakh passengers annually, the facility is equipped with advanced passenger amenities, digital services, and improved operational infrastructure to provide a smoother travel experience.
The terminal’s architecture reflects Rajasthan’s rich cultural heritage, incorporating traditional design elements such as arches and jharokhas while integrating modern airport facilities. The blend of heritage-inspired aesthetics with contemporary infrastructure is intended to offer travellers a distinctive gateway to the state.
Focus on Affordable Air Travel
Alongside the airport inauguration, the Prime Minister launched the Modified UDAN Scheme, an upgraded version of the government’s regional connectivity programme aimed at expanding affordable air travel to underserved regions.
The revised scheme has been allocated ₹28,840 crore over the next decade. It seeks to improve aviation access by developing new regional airports, operationalising unused airstrips, constructing helipads, and strengthening maintenance support for regional aviation services.
Officials said the new framework is designed to ensure that smaller towns and remote regions become better connected to the national aviation network, making air travel more accessible for ordinary citizens.
Expansion of Regional Aviation Network
The modified programme focuses on creating a stronger regional aviation ecosystem by developing around 100 aerodromes from existing unserved airstrips. It also proposes the construction of hundreds of modern helipads and increased financial assistance for airport operations during their initial years.
The government believes these measures will encourage airlines to operate on regional routes while improving connectivity for areas that have historically remained outside the mainstream aviation network.
Better connectivity is also expected to reduce travel time, promote economic integration, and improve access to education, healthcare, and commercial opportunities in smaller cities.
Tourism and Trade Expected to Receive Major Boost
Jodhpur remains one of Rajasthan’s leading tourist destinations, attracting visitors for its historic forts, palaces, desert landscapes, and cultural heritage. Improved airport infrastructure is expected to increase tourist arrivals and strengthen the local hospitality industry.
Business communities have also welcomed the development, saying enhanced air connectivity will facilitate investment, trade, and industrial growth across western Rajasthan. Easier transportation is expected to improve logistics for entrepreneurs while making the region more attractive for domestic and international investors.
Passenger-Centric Infrastructure
The airport terminal has been designed with passenger comfort as a key priority. Modern check-in facilities, spacious waiting lounges, enhanced baggage handling systems, digital information displays, and improved accessibility features are expected to significantly improve the travel experience.
Authorities believe the increased handling capacity will also help accommodate future growth in passenger traffic as Rajasthan continues to witness rising tourism and business travel.
Government’s Vision for Aviation Growth
The inauguration forms part of the Centre’s broader strategy to strengthen India’s aviation sector through infrastructure expansion and wider regional connectivity. Since the launch of the original UDAN programme, numerous smaller airports have been connected to the national aviation network.
The revised scheme seeks to build upon those achievements by expanding coverage, improving operational sustainability, and supporting long-term aviation-led economic development.
Officials say stronger regional connectivity will contribute to balanced economic growth by linking remote districts with major metropolitan centres, encouraging investment, and generating employment opportunities across multiple sectors.
