NEW DELHI: The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has announced plans to develop its Women Technical Institute (WTI) in Netaji Nagar into a Centre of Excellence for women’s skill development and technical education, reinforcing its commitment to the vision of a developed India under “Viksit Bharat @2047.”
During a visit to the institute on Thursday, NDMC Vice Chairman Kuljeet Singh Chahal interacted with students, faculty members, and staff, reviewing the institution’s facilities and discussing ways to enhance its educational offerings. He emphasized that empowering women through vocational and technical training is essential for building a skilled and self-reliant nation.
Addressing students, Chahal said that the country’s youth, particularly young women, are key contributors to the realization of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a developed India. He noted that institutions such as the Women Technical Institute play an important role in preparing students with the skills and confidence needed to participate in the nation’s growth story.
The Vice Chairman conducted a detailed inspection of classrooms, laboratories, and training facilities within the institute. He also listened to suggestions from students and teachers regarding infrastructure improvements, curriculum expansion, and future opportunities. Assuring them of NDMC’s support, Chahal said the council would take necessary measures to strengthen the institute and align it with contemporary educational and industry requirements.
Established in 1990, the Women Technical Institute has emerged as a prominent centre for vocational and technical training for women. The institute offers courses affiliated with the National Council for Vocational Training (NCVT), State Council for Vocational Training (SCVT), and Prayag Sangeet Samiti. Its programmes include Computer Operator and Programming Assistant (COPA), Hindi and English stenography, beauty and hair dressing, cutting and tailoring, dress designing, textile designing, cooking, catering and home management, along with music and dance training courses.
Highlighting the rapidly changing employment landscape, Chahal stressed the need to introduce new-age skill programmes. He suggested launching short-term courses in Artificial Intelligence, digital technologies, information technology, entrepreneurship, and other emerging sectors. According to him, such initiatives would help students adapt to future industry demands and improve their employability in an increasingly technology-driven economy.
During the interaction session, students shared their experiences regarding several welfare and development initiatives implemented by the Central Government over the past twelve years. They spoke about the benefits of the Pradhan Mantri Vishwakarma Yojana, including skill enhancement opportunities, financial assistance, and toolkits designed to support traditional artisans and workers.
Students also highlighted improvements in public infrastructure, metro connectivity, women’s safety measures, and various empowerment initiatives that have positively impacted their lives and communities. Chahal listened to their feedback and encouraged them to make full use of educational and skill-development opportunities available to them.
The NDMC Vice Chairman praised the faculty and staff for their dedication to nurturing talent and helping students build successful careers. He said the institution’s contribution to women’s empowerment and skill development has been significant and deserves continued support and expansion.
Reiterating NDMC’s commitment, Chahal stated that the council would focus on upgrading infrastructure, introducing modern training modules, and expanding academic opportunities. He said every effort would be made to transform the Women Technical Institute into a Centre of Excellence that can serve as a model for women-focused vocational and technical education.
The proposed transformation is expected to strengthen the institute’s role in preparing women for emerging career opportunities while contributing to India’s broader goal of creating a highly skilled workforce. With a stronger focus on innovation, technology, and entrepreneurship, the institute is expected to play a larger role in advancing women’s participation in economic development and nation-building.
The announcement reflects NDMC’s intention to modernize the Women Technical Institute and expand its role beyond traditional vocational training. By introducing courses in areas such as Artificial Intelligence, digital skills, and entrepreneurship, the institute aims to equip women with future-ready capabilities.
