NEW DELHI: In a significant step towards deepening digital and financial cooperation, India and Nepal have officially launched a peer-to-peer (P2P) cross-border remittance mechanism, enabling seamless and instant money transfers between citizens of the two neighbouring countries.

The initiative, which became operational on June 6, 2026, establishes a direct connection between India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and Nepal’s National Payments Interface (NPI). The integration allows users in the India and Nepal to send and receive funds instantly through mobile banking applications and digital wallets, making cross-border transactions faster, safer, and more convenient.

The development marks another milestone in India’s growing digital payments ecosystem and reflects the strong economic and people-to-people ties shared by India and Nepal. Officials said the platform is designed to support secure, affordable, and accessible digital payments while promoting greater financial inclusion across the region.

The technical integration has been implemented through a partnership between the National Payments Corporation of India’s international arm, NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL), and Nepal Clearing House Limited (NCHL). The collaboration creates a direct payment corridor that removes many of the barriers traditionally associated with cross-border money transfers.

With the new system in place, individuals can transfer money in real time without relying on conventional banking channels that often involve longer processing times and additional costs. The service is expected to benefit migrant workers, students, families, tourists, and businesses that regularly engage in financial transactions between the two countries.

Industry experts view the UPI-NPI linkage as a major advancement in regional digital integration. The initiative is expected to simplify financial interactions and encourage wider adoption of digital payment systems across South Asia.

For travellers, the platform offers a hassle-free payment experience by reducing dependence on cash and minimizing the need for currency exchange. Visitors can make payments using familiar digital applications, improving convenience while travelling across borders.

Local merchants and businesses in Nepal are also expected to gain from the increased use of digital payments by Indian visitors. Faster settlements, improved cash flow management, and reduced costs associated with handling physical currency are among the anticipated advantages. The system also enhances transaction security and transparency for both consumers and businesses.

The launch further reinforces India’s efforts to expand the global reach of UPI, which has emerged as one of the world’s most successful real-time payment platforms. UPI is currently accepted in nine countries, including Nepal, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, France, Mauritius, Bhutan, Qatar, Sri Lanka, and Cambodia. Indian travellers in these destinations can use UPI-enabled applications for seamless digital payments.

The India-Nepal payment linkage is expected to serve as a model for future regional financial connectivity initiatives, strengthening economic cooperation and supporting the broader vision of digital integration across neighbouring countries.
