Nana Patekar, one of Indian cinema’s most distinctive and powerful performers, died on October 8 at the age of 75 after being found unconscious at his home in Goa. Doctors reportedly tried to revive him following a cardiac arrest, but he could not be saved. His death marks the end of a remarkable career spanning Hindi and Marathi cinema, theatre and filmmaking.

Yet, remembering Nana Patekar only as a celebrated actor would leave out one of the most important parts of his story. Away from the cameras, awards and unmistakable dialogues, Patekar remained deeply connected to his humble beginnings, rural life and the struggles of farmers.

A performer who never needed to become larger than life

Nana Patekar possessed something that is increasingly rare in cinema: an ability to command attention without appearing to seek it.

His voice could convey anger, pain, humour or vulnerability within seconds. His silences were often as expressive as his dialogues. Whether playing a ruthless character, a troubled protagonist or an eccentric comic figure, he brought an unmistakable realism to the screen.

His performances in films such as Parinda, Krantiveer, Salaam Bombay!, Agni Sakshi, Ab Tak Chhappan and Natsamrat established him as an actor capable of moving between emotionally demanding and commercially popular cinema. His portrayal of Uday Shetty in Welcome also demonstrated his extraordinary comic timing.

He eventually became the recipient of three National Film Awards and was honoured with the Padma Shri in 2013.

From hardship to an extraordinary acting career

Born Vishwanath Patekar in Maharashtra in 1951, Nana’s early life was far removed from the glamour associated with Bollywood.

He experienced financial hardship and began working at a young age. Theatre became an important part of his formative years, while his education at the Sir J.J. Institute of Applied Art and early work in advertising helped shape his artistic sensibilities.

Those difficult experiences eventually became an unexpected strength.

There was little artificiality in his performances. His characters often carried the weight of ordinary people who had experienced disappointment, anger, poverty, loneliness or injustice. His acting appeared less like a performance and more like an observation of real human behaviour. That authenticity became his signature.

The farmer remained at the heart of Nana Patekar

Despite decades of success in the film industry, Patekar increasingly gravitated towards rural Maharashtra.

He spent considerable time at his farmhouse, surrounded by animals and agricultural life, and repeatedly spoke about feeling more comfortable away from the crowded world of Mumbai. His connection with farmers was not simply an extension of his public image; it became a meaningful part of his life. The plight of farmers affected him deeply.

A television report about farmer suicides reportedly made him reconsider how he wanted to use his personal wealth. Instead of focusing solely on material possessions, he began directing his attention towards families devastated by rural distress.

NAAM Foundation became a mission beyond cinema

In 2015, Patekar and fellow Marathi actor Makarand Anaspure helped establish the NAAM Foundation in response to drought and the growing crisis facing farmers in Maharashtra.

The organisation worked on areas including water conservation, rural development and assistance to farming communities. For Patekar, the initiative represented something larger than philanthropy. It offered him a sense of purpose beyond the film industry.

His involvement also reflected an important aspect of his personality: he was not particularly interested in using celebrity status simply for glamour. He wanted his fame to have practical value.

Even in 2026, shortly before his death, Patekar continued speaking publicly about farmers and the emotional pressures confronting rural communities. His concern remained focused on dignity, support and the need to ensure that struggling families did not feel abandoned.

His legacy goes far beyond memorable dialogues

Nana Patekar leaves behind a body of work that cannot easily be placed into one category.

He could be intimidating without shouting, funny without forcing a joke and deeply emotional without excessive melodrama. His career demonstrated that a performer did not need conventional star glamour to become unforgettable.

His Marathi work, particularly Natsamrat, brought together his lifelong relationship with theatre and his understanding of human vulnerability. His Hindi performances introduced generations of audiences to characters who felt complicated, imperfect and real. But perhaps his most enduring legacy exists away from the screen.

It is in the memory of an actor who never completely surrendered himself to celebrity culture. A man who could receive major awards and still find meaning in farming. A performer who could command millions of viewers yet remain concerned about people whose lives were far removed from the film industry.

Nana Patekar will be remembered as much for the man as the actor

Indian cinema has lost a singular voice. Nana Patekar’s films will continue to preserve his intensity, his humour and his extraordinary command of dialogue. But the fuller story of his life is found in the contrast between the actor audiences saw on screen and the man who preferred the quietness of rural life.

He came through hardship, built an extraordinary career and earned some of the highest honours in Indian cinema. Yet he never completely abandoned the world from which he came.

For millions of viewers, Nana Patekar will remain the unforgettable actor.

For those who followed his life beyond the screen, he will also be remembered as the farmer at heart who never forgot his roots.

And perhaps that is the most fitting tribute: not to make him larger than life, but to remember the life he chose to remain connected to.
