MUMBAI: A devastating accident struck Maharashtra’s Parbhani district on Saturday when the roof of an under-construction sabha mandap (assembly hall) at a Hanuman temple in Yashwadi village suddenly collapsed, killing several devotees and injuring many others. The incident occurred during a religious gathering when a large number of worshippers had assembled at the temple premises.

Authorities initially reported varying casualty figures as rescue operations continued throughout the day. Multiple reports later indicated that at least seven people had lost their lives, while around 30 others sustained injuries, some of them critically.

How the Incident Happened

The accident took place at around 3 pm to 3.30 pm in Yashwadi village of Manwat taluka in Parbhani district. Since Saturday is considered especially significant for devotees of Lord Hanuman, the temple was crowded with worshippers participating in religious activities.

According to officials, the under-construction roof of the sabha mandap suddenly gave way, trapping dozens of devotees beneath heavy concrete slabs and debris. Panic spread instantly as people nearby rushed to help those trapped underneath.

Eyewitness videos circulating online showed moments of chaos as people screamed for help and volunteers attempted to pull victims out before emergency teams arrived.

Massive Rescue Operation Launched

District administration officials, police personnel, fire brigade teams and local residents immediately began rescue efforts at the site. Heavy machinery was deployed to clear debris and search for survivors.

Officials worked continuously to remove trapped devotees in a coordinated operation. Several injured people were shifted to nearby hospitals and Parbhani District Civil Hospital for treatment.

Authorities stated that the first few hours after the collapse were critical, prompting rescue teams to work on a war footing to save as many lives as possible.

Government Responds to the Tragedy

Maharashtra Chief Minister expressed condolences over the loss of lives and assured that all possible assistance would be provided to affected families. Senior administrative officials remained stationed at the accident site to supervise rescue and relief operations.

State officials also confirmed that injured devotees were receiving immediate medical attention and that all necessary resources had been mobilised to support rescue efforts.

The state government is expected to announce compensation for the families of the deceased and financial support for those injured in the incident.

Questions Raised Over Construction Safety

The tragedy has once again highlighted concerns regarding safety protocols at under-construction religious structures and public gathering spaces.

Preliminary investigations are expected to examine:

  • The quality of construction materials used.
  • Whether proper engineering approvals were obtained.
  • Compliance with safety standards.
  • Whether devotees were allowed beneath an unfinished structure.
  • Possible negligence by contractors and organisers.

Experts have repeatedly warned that under-construction buildings should remain inaccessible to large crowds until structural work is fully completed and certified safe for public use.

Community in Mourning

The accident has left the entire region in shock. Local residents, devotees and community leaders gathered near the temple to assist rescue teams and support grieving families.

Many survivors described scenes of confusion and fear as the roof suddenly collapsed without warning. Several families who had visited the temple for prayers found themselves caught in one of the state’s worst temple-related accidents in recent years.

As rescue efforts continue and investigations begin, authorities are expected to determine accountability and implement measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
