At least 20 people have died after a powerful magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck off Indonesia’s Flores Island early Saturday, triggering building collapses, landslides, widespread panic and a temporary tsunami warning. Rescue teams were searching damaged areas for survivors as authorities assessed the full scale of the destruction.
The earthquake struck offshore near Flores in East Nusa Tenggara, one of Indonesia’s most seismically active regions. The shallow tremor was followed by numerous aftershocks, intensifying fears among residents already shaken by the initial impact. Authorities also issued a temporary tsunami warning for several coastal areas before lifting it after monitoring showed that no dangerous sea-level rise was developing.
Buildings Collapse as Powerful Tremors Rock Flores
Footage emerging from affected areas captured the terrifying impact of the earthquake. Buildings appeared to shake violently before parts of structures collapsed, while residents ran away from damaged homes and other buildings in search of safer ground.
The scenes reflected the force of the earthquake, with debris reportedly falling from structures and dust spreading through affected neighbourhoods. Social media videos showed frightened residents gathering outside rather than remaining indoors as the possibility of further tremors remained a concern.
Initial reports indicated damage to homes and public infrastructure in several areas. The full extent of destruction remained difficult to establish immediately because some locations were affected by disrupted communications, damaged roads and landslides.
Death Toll Rises as Rescue Operations Continue
The earthquake has caused fatalities and injuries, with the reported death toll increasing as emergency teams reach more affected locations. Reuters reported that at least 20 people had died, while rescuers continued searching damaged areas and assessing the destruction.

Authorities warned that casualty figures could change as rescue and recovery operations progress. Some victims were reportedly trapped beneath rubble following building collapses, while emergency responders faced difficulties reaching certain areas because of landslides and disrupted transport links.
The main town of Maumere in Sikka Regency was among the areas reporting significant impacts. Emergency teams were working to assist injured people and assess damaged buildings, while residents in vulnerable areas moved to safer locations.
Thousands Evacuate After Tsunami Warning
The earthquake initially triggered a tsunami warning, adding another layer of fear to the disaster. Coastal communities were advised to move away from vulnerable areas and seek higher ground.
Residents responded quickly, with large numbers leaving their homes and moving toward safer locations. Reports said around 2,000 people evacuated from Nagekeo, where homes, government buildings and warehouses were damaged.
The warning was later lifted after authorities found no significant sea-level changes capable of producing a dangerous tsunami. Minor tsunami waves of less than one metre were nevertheless recorded in some areas, according to reports.
Landslides and Power Disruptions Add to Crisis
The earthquake also triggered landslides in parts of Flores, complicating rescue operations and restricting access to affected communities. Some roads were reportedly blocked, while communication and electricity services were disrupted in areas hit by the strongest shaking.
The difficult terrain of Flores presents additional challenges for emergency crews. Mountainous landscapes, scattered settlements and damaged transport routes can slow the movement of rescue personnel, medical teams and relief supplies.
Hospitals in some affected areas also faced pressure following the earthquake. Reports said patients were moved outdoors in certain locations because of concerns about further structural damage and aftershocks.
Indonesia’s Pacific Ring of Fire Risk
Indonesia is particularly vulnerable to earthquakes because it sits along the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area characterised by intense tectonic activity and numerous active volcanoes and fault systems.
Flores has experienced devastating earthquakes in the past. The island was struck by a major 7.7-magnitude earthquake and tsunami in December 1992, a disaster that killed thousands of people. The region therefore remains highly sensitive to major seismic events and tsunami threats.
The latest earthquake has once again highlighted the continuing seismic danger faced by communities across eastern Indonesia.
Emergency Response Underway
Rescue teams and local authorities are continuing to inspect damaged areas, search collapsed structures and provide assistance to displaced residents. Officials are also assessing infrastructure damage and monitoring the region for further aftershocks.
