The Indian Navy has received another MH-60R Seahawk, popularly known as the “Romeo,” further strengthening its frontline maritime aviation capabilities. The latest delivery is part of India’s ongoing acquisition of 24 advanced multi-role helicopters from the United States under a government-to-government agreement aimed at modernising the Navy’s anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare capabilities. Two additional helicopters are also expected to arrive shortly, accelerating the induction process.

Major Boost to India’s Maritime Security

The arrival of another MH-60R Seahawk marks a significant milestone in India’s efforts to enhance maritime surveillance and operational readiness across the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). As underwater threats continue to evolve and regional naval activity intensifies, the Indian Navy has been focusing on replacing its ageing fleet of Sea King helicopters with modern, technologically advanced aircraft.

The newly inducted helicopter is expected to operate from frontline warships, including aircraft carriers, destroyers and frigates, significantly improving the Navy’s ability to detect, track and neutralise hostile submarines while also supporting a wide range of maritime missions.

According to official announcements, the helicopter was delivered to Kochi, where it will join the Navy’s expanding fleet of MH-60R helicopters.

What Makes the MH-60R Seahawk Special?

The MH-60R Seahawk is regarded as one of the world’s most capable multi-mission naval helicopters. Designed for modern maritime warfare, it combines advanced sensors, radar systems, electronic warfare equipment and precision weaponry into a single platform.

Its primary missions include:

  • Anti-submarine warfare (ASW)
  • Anti-surface warfare (ASuW)
  • Maritime surveillance
  • Search and rescue (SAR)
  • Medical evacuation (MEDEVAC)
  • Vertical replenishment and logistics support

The helicopter is equipped with sophisticated sonar systems, sonobuoys, advanced maritime radar, electro-optical sensors and secure communication systems that allow it to operate effectively in challenging environments.

Its weapon package can include lightweight torpedoes and anti-ship missiles, enabling it to engage both underwater and surface threats with high precision.

Enhancing India’s Anti-Submarine Warfare Capability

Submarine activity in the Indo-Pacific has increased considerably in recent years, making anti-submarine warfare one of the Indian Navy’s top priorities.

Navy

The MH-60R helicopters play a crucial role in detecting enemy submarines at extended distances before they pose a threat to Indian naval assets. Their advanced dipping sonar and sonobuoy systems can identify underwater targets with greater accuracy than previous-generation helicopters.

These aircraft also work alongside India’s P-8I maritime patrol aircraft and frontline naval warships to create an integrated maritime surveillance network capable of monitoring vast stretches of the Indian Ocean.

Defence experts consider the Romeo helicopter a force multiplier that significantly improves the Navy’s underwater warfare capability.

Strengthening the India-US Defence Partnership

The induction of another MH-60R also reflects the growing strategic defence relationship between India and the United States.

The helicopters were acquired through the US Foreign Military Sales (FMS) programme, representing one of the largest defence aviation procurements for the Indian Navy.

The United States has described the deliveries as another important step in strengthening bilateral defence cooperation and enhancing maritime security in the Indo-Pacific region.

The continued transfer of advanced defence technology highlights the expanding military collaboration between the two countries, particularly in maintaining a free, open and secure Indo-Pacific.

Fleet Expansion Continues

India signed a contract for 24 MH-60R helicopters to replace ageing naval helicopters that had served for decades.

Several helicopters have already entered operational service, with the remaining deliveries expected to be completed in phases. The Indian Navy has also established dedicated squadrons to operate the new fleet, enabling quicker deployment aboard frontline warships and aircraft carriers.

As additional helicopters arrive, the Navy’s operational flexibility is expected to improve significantly, allowing simultaneous deployment across multiple maritime theatres.

The induction programme also includes long-term maintenance, training and logistics support to ensure sustained operational availability throughout the fleet’s service life.

A Strategic Asset for the Future

The addition of another MH-60R Seahawk reinforces India’s long-term maritime modernisation strategy. With increasing strategic competition across the Indo-Pacific and growing underwater threats, the helicopter provides the Indian Navy with an advanced platform capable of carrying out surveillance, combat and humanitarian missions alike.

As the remaining helicopters join the fleet, India’s naval aviation capability is expected to become stronger, enhancing maritime security, safeguarding sea lanes and improving the country’s ability to respond rapidly to emerging threats across the region.
