KOLKATA: The tragic train accident involving a school van at a level crossing in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district has left the state in mourning, with several lives lost and many others injured. As rescue operations concluded and the focus shifted to accountability, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari assured the public that strict action would be taken against anyone found responsible. At the same time, the Ministry of Railways announced financial assistance for the victims’ families, including an ex gratia payment of ₹10 lakh for the next of kin of each deceased victim.

Suvendu Adhikari Expresses Grief Over the Tragedy

Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari expressed deep sorrow over the heartbreaking incident, describing it as an immense loss for the affected families. Extending his condolences to the families of those who lost their lives, particularly the children involved in the accident, he prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured.

The Chief Minister said the state government was closely monitoring the situation and ensuring that all injured victims received proper medical treatment. He also stressed that negligence, if established during the investigation, would not be tolerated under any circumstances.

Strict Action Promised Against Those Responsible

Addressing the incident, Suvendu Adhikari made it clear that accountability would be ensured after the investigation is completed. He stated that every aspect of the accident would be thoroughly examined and that anyone found guilty of negligence or violating railway safety procedures would face strict legal and departmental action.

His assurance came amid growing public concern over the circumstances that led to the collision between the passenger train and the school van at the level crossing.

Railways Announce ₹10 Lakh Ex Gratia

The Ministry of Railways announced compensation for the victims shortly after the accident. Families of every deceased victim will receive ₹10 lakh as ex gratia assistance.

Railway authorities also declared that those who suffered serious injuries would receive ₹2.5 lakh, while compensation for victims with minor injuries would be provided according to existing railway relief norms.

Officials said the financial assistance is intended to provide immediate relief to families facing an unimaginable tragedy.

High-Level Inquiry Underway

Accident

To determine the exact cause of the accident, the Indian Railways has constituted a 10-member high-level inquiry committee. The committee has been tasked with examining every aspect of the incident, including railway operations, signalling records, gate management, and witness statements.

Senior railway officials visited the accident site soon after the collision and began collecting evidence. The committee is expected to submit its findings after completing a comprehensive investigation.

Preliminary Findings Focus on Level Crossing Operations

According to preliminary information shared by railway officials, there was no reported failure in the signalling system. Initial findings suggest that the passenger train was operating under proper signal clearance at the time of the accident.

Investigators are now focusing on whether the level crossing gate was open when the school van attempted to cross the tracks. Railway officials are examining duty records, communication logs, and operational procedures to determine whether there was any lapse in gate management.

Authorities have indicated that the inquiry will establish whether human error played a role in the tragedy.

Rescue Teams Respond Swiftly

Soon after the collision, local residents, police personnel, railway officials, and disaster response teams rushed to the scene. Rescue workers evacuated injured passengers and occupants of the school van before shifting them to nearby hospitals.

Doctors at Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital continue to treat the injured. State authorities have directed hospital officials to provide the best possible medical care, while district administrators remain in constant touch with affected families.

The damaged school van was later removed from the railway tracks, allowing railway engineers to inspect the site and restore normal train operations.

Growing Concerns Over Railway Crossing Safety

The accident has once again raised serious questions about safety measures at level crossings across the railway network. Local residents alleged that the crossing gate was open when the van entered the tracks, although investigators have not yet officially confirmed these claims.

Railway authorities have appealed to the public to avoid speculation until the inquiry committee completes its investigation. Officials emphasised that all technical and operational evidence would be examined before any conclusions are drawn.

Safety experts believe the findings of the inquiry could lead to additional recommendations for strengthening safety protocols at level crossings, particularly those used frequently by school vehicles and local commuters.

State and Railways Coordinate Relief Efforts

The West Bengal administration and the Ministry of Railways are jointly monitoring relief and rehabilitation efforts following the accident. Senior officials from both agencies have remained at the accident site and hospitals to oversee rescue operations, provide assistance to victims, and coordinate support for grieving families.

Authorities have assured the public that financial relief will be disbursed without unnecessary delay and that the investigation will be conducted in a transparent manner.

Focus Remains on Justice and Prevention

As Murshidabad mourns one of its most tragic railway accidents in recent years, attention is now focused on ensuring justice for the victims and preventing similar incidents in the future.

With a high-level railway inquiry in progress, compensation announced for affected families, and Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari promising strict action against anyone found responsible, both the state government and the Railways have pledged to identify the cause of the accident and strengthen railway safety measures. The findings of the investigation are expected to play a crucial role in determining accountability and introducing safeguards to avoid such tragedies in the years ahead.
