The Indian Embassy in the United States has strongly objected to the use of the term “Pakistani Kashmir” by an international media outlet, describing the phrase as “misleading and incorrect.” The diplomatic mission asserted that there is no region called “Pakistani Kashmir” and reaffirmed India’s long-standing position that the territory under Pakistan’s control is Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), an integral part of India that remains under illegal occupation.
The response came after a report by a leading American newspaper referred to the region as “Pakistani Kashmir” while covering the recent political developments and unrest in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The terminology immediately drew criticism from Indian officials, who argued that such descriptions distort the internationally recognized legal and historical position maintained by India.
Embassy Calls Headline ‘Misleading and Incorrect’
In a public statement, the Indian Embassy in Washington said the media outlet’s wording failed to accurately reflect the status of the territory.
“Misleading and incorrect headline. There is no Pakistani Kashmir, only Pakistan-occupied Kashmir,” the Embassy said.
The Embassy further stressed that the entire Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, including the areas under Pakistan’s illegal occupation, are an integral and inalienable part of India. It urged international media organizations to exercise greater caution while reporting on sensitive geopolitical issues involving territorial disputes.
India Reiterates Its Consistent Position
India has consistently maintained that Pakistan-occupied Kashmir is part of its sovereign territory. New Delhi has repeatedly stated that Pakistan’s presence in the region is illegal and has called upon Islamabad to vacate the occupied areas.
