NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences to the victims of the devastating earthquake that struck Mindanao in the Philippines, reaffirming India’s support and solidarity with the Philippine government and its people during the crisis.
A powerful earthquake struck the southern Philippine island of Mindanao on Monday, leaving at least 32 people dead, injuring more than 200 others, and causing extensive damage to buildings, schools, and public infrastructure. Authorities have launched large-scale rescue and relief operations as aftershocks continue to rattle the affected region.
Reacting to the tragedy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed his condolences through a message expressing sympathy for the victims and their families.
“Saddened by the loss of lives and destruction caused by today’s earthquake in Mindanao, Philippines. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and prayers for the speedy recovery of those injured. India stands in solidarity with the people and the Government of the Philippines,” the Prime Minister said.
The earthquake, measured at a magnitude of 7.8, struck off the coast of Sarangani province in southern Philippines. The tremor was felt across large parts of Mindanao and neighboring regions, triggering panic among residents and prompting tsunami warnings in several coastal areas. The warnings were later lifted after authorities assessed the threat level.
According to Philippine officials, many of the casualties were caused by collapsing structures, falling debris, and landslides triggered by the quake. Several buildings, including commercial establishments and educational institutions, suffered severe damage. Emergency responders continued search-and-rescue efforts in the hardest-hit areas, where some people were reported missing beneath collapsed structures.
The disaster struck on the first day of the new academic session in many parts of Mindanao, disrupting classes for millions of students. Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ordered the suspension of classes in affected areas and directed government agencies to mobilize resources for relief and rehabilitation efforts.
Authorities reported widespread disruptions, including power outages, damaged roads, and temporary suspension of airport operations in some locations. Engineers and emergency teams have been deployed to assess structural safety and restore essential services.
The Philippines, situated along the seismically active Pacific Ring of Fire, frequently experiences earthquakes and volcanic activity. Experts have warned that aftershocks may continue in the coming days, prompting authorities to advise residents to remain vigilant.
India’s message of solidarity adds to the international support being extended to the Philippines as the country grapples with one of its strongest and deadliest earthquakes in recent years.
