NEW DELHI: India on Wednesday strongly condemned the attack on the commercial vessel Settebello off the coast of Oman and summoned United States Chargé d’Affaires Jason Meeks to register a formal diplomatic protest over the incident. The attack has triggered concern in New Delhi after three Indian crew members were reported missing.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the vessel was carrying 24 Indian crew members when it came under attack in waters near Oman. While rescue efforts succeeded in bringing 21 crew members to safety, three Indians remain unaccounted for, prompting an intensive search operation.

In response to the incident, Additional Secretary (Americas) Nagaraj Naidu summoned Jason Meeks and conveyed India’s serious concerns regarding the attack and the safety of Indian nationals working aboard the vessel. The diplomatic move underlined New Delhi’s expectation that the circumstances surrounding the attack be fully clarified and that accountability be ensured.

The MEA described the attack on a commercial vessel as a matter of grave concern, particularly because it endangered civilian seafarers. India reiterated its commitment to the safety and security of its citizens employed in international shipping and called for adherence to international maritime norms.

Reports indicate that the attack occurred in waters off Oman, a strategically important maritime route used by commercial shipping. The incident has raised fresh concerns about security in the region and the risks faced by merchant vessels operating in international waters.

The government has been closely monitoring developments and remains in contact with relevant authorities regarding the ongoing search for the missing crew members. Officials have assured that all possible assistance is being extended to the affected Indians and their families.

The episode marks a significant diplomatic development, with India formally conveying its protest to the United States while simultaneously pressing for information about the missing sailors. As rescue and search efforts continue, New Delhi has emphasized that the protection of civilian lives and freedom of navigation must remain paramount in international waters.
