NEW DELHI: The Central Government on Thursday unveiled a series of emergency measures to protect India’s energy security, aviation sector and the interests of Indian citizens amid the continuing geopolitical tensions in West Asia. During an inter-ministerial media briefing, senior officials from multiple ministries assured the public that the country remains well-prepared to handle any potential disruptions arising from the regional crisis.
₹10,000 Crore ATF Stabilisation Fund Approved
One of the key announcements was the creation of a one-time Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) Price Stabilisation Fund worth up to ₹10,000 crore. The initiative aims to shield airlines and passengers from sharp fluctuations in global aviation fuel prices. Under the scheme, oil marketing companies will receive interest-free advances to supply aviation fuel at stable rates, helping airlines manage costs and maintain regular operations.
Relief for Airlines and Air Passengers
Officials stated that aviation fuel constitutes a major portion of airline operating expenses. The stabilisation fund is expected to prevent sudden spikes in airfare and ensure uninterrupted domestic and international flight services. The move is also aimed at protecting jobs across aviation, tourism, hospitality and related sectors.
Adequate Fuel Stocks Available Across the Country
The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas reassured citizens that India has sufficient reserves of crude oil, petrol and diesel. Refineries across the country are operating at high capacity and fuel supplies remain stable. Authorities urged people not to engage in panic buying and emphasized that there is no immediate threat to fuel availability.
LPG, PNG and CNG Supplies Remain Unaffected
The government confirmed that domestic LPG, Piped Natural Gas (PNG) and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) supplies continue without interruption. Additional measures have been implemented to strengthen supply chains, including enhanced refinery output and revised booking schedules for LPG cylinders. Priority allocations are being provided to hospitals, educational institutions and essential industries.
Nationwide Crackdown on Hoarding and Black Marketing
To prevent artificial shortages, enforcement agencies have intensified action against hoarding and black marketing. More than 1,880 raids have been conducted across the country in the past three days. Authorities seized large quantities of petrol and diesel, registered several FIRs and made multiple arrests. Inspections of LPG distributorships and fuel stations have also led to penalties and suspensions in cases of violations.
Record LPG Deliveries to Consumers
Officials reported that approximately 1.43 crore domestic LPG cylinders were delivered against bookings of nearly 1.50 crore cylinders during the last three days. The government said there are no reports of widespread shortages and domestic consumers remain the top priority. The use of Delivery Authentication Codes has also been expanded to prevent diversion and misuse of LPG cylinders.
Push Towards Cleaner Fuel Alternatives
The government highlighted growing adoption of Piped Natural Gas under the MYPNGD initiative. More than 80,000 consumers have voluntarily surrendered LPG connections after switching to PNG. Authorities said efforts are underway to expand gas distribution networks and improve access to cleaner energy sources across the country.
Measures to Cushion Consumers from Rising Prices
Officials noted that the Centre has already reduced excise duties on petrol and diesel by ₹10 per litre. Export duties on petroleum products and aviation fuel have also been lowered to ensure better domestic availability and reduce the impact of global price volatility on consumers.
Maritime Operations Continue Normally
The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways stated that all Indian seafarers operating in the Gulf region are safe. No recent incidents involving Indian-flagged vessels have been reported. Port operations across India continue without disruption, while the Directorate General of Shipping remains on alert through its dedicated control room.
Indian Missions on High Alert in West Asia
The Ministry of External Affairs confirmed that Indian embassies and consulates across West Asia are functioning round the clock to assist Indian nationals. Missions are coordinating closely with local authorities and issuing regular advisories related to travel, safety and transportation.
Flight Connectivity Largely Maintained
Despite regional tensions, flight services between India and several Gulf nations, including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait and Bahrain, continue to operate. Authorities have also facilitated the movement of thousands of Indian citizens from sensitive locations, including Iran, where security concerns remain high.
Government Expresses Condolences Over Kuwait Airport Attack
The government also expressed condolences following a recent attack on Kuwait International Airport that resulted in the death of an Indian national. Thirteen other Indians were injured in the incident and are receiving treatment. Indian authorities are coordinating with local officials and extending support to the affected families.
Government Monitoring Situation Closely
Concluding the briefing, officials emphasized that the government is closely monitoring developments in West Asia. They reiterated that all necessary steps are being taken to ensure uninterrupted energy supplies, stable transportation services and the safety and welfare of Indian citizens both within the country and abroad.
