Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump held a significant bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the G7 Summit, where both leaders discussed trade, strategic cooperation, maritime security, West Asia peace efforts and the expanding global role of India.
The meeting reflected the growing momentum in India-US relations, with both leaders exchanging warm remarks and reaffirming their commitment to strengthening one of the world’s most important strategic partnerships.
PM Modi: India-US Relations Are Gaining “New Speed And Energy”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi began by highlighting the positive trajectory of the relationship between New Delhi and Washington.
He said the India-US partnership was entering a new phase of growth and cooperation. “India-US relations are gaining new speed and energy,” PM Modi said while addressing President Trump before formal discussions began.
The Prime Minister also praised Trump for his efforts to advance peace initiatives in West Asia, acknowledging Washington’s role in promoting regional stability. “I commend you for your leadership on the progress in peace efforts in West Asia,” PM Modi told the US President.
Maritime Security And Indian Seafarers Become A Key Focus
One of the major talking points during the meeting was maritime security, especially amid rising geopolitical tensions in critical global shipping routes. PM Modi stressed that India has consistently advocated for freedom of navigation and the protection of international trade corridors.
“We have always said that freedom of navigation should be ensured,” he said. The Prime Minister pointed out that lakhs of Indian seafarers are employed across global maritime networks and their safety remains a top priority for India.
Referring to diplomatic efforts involving Iran and regional stability, PM Modi expressed hope that the security of seafarers would be protected under any future arrangements. He further emphasised the importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open, calling it crucial for the global economy.
“Keeping the Strait of Hormuz open is vital for the global economy. This offers new hope for peace and stability,” PM Modi said.
Trump Highlights Trade Progress And Strategic Trust
Following PM Modi’s remarks, President Donald Trump spoke extensively about the growing relationship between the two countries.
Trump said discussions on trade were progressing positively and indicated that both sides were working towards strengthening economic ties.
“We had some very good conversations with Prime Minister Modi of India. We’re doing trade deals. A lot of things are happening between the United States and India,” Trump said.
The US President also underlined his long-standing relationship with the Indian Prime Minister.
“He’s been my friend for a long time now, and we’ve always had a great relationship. It’s great to be with you,” he added.
Trump Praises Modi’s Leadership And India’s Rising Influence
Trump strongly endorsed India’s expanding global role and credited PM Modi’s leadership for the country’s increasing international prominence.
When asked whether India could play a larger role in West Asia, Trump responded positively. “Yes, I do. I think India plays a big role in everything,” he said. He further added,“As long as he is the leader, India is going to play a big role.”
Trump’s Light-Hearted Praise For PM Modi Draws Attention
In a lighter moment during the interaction, Trump used colourful language to describe PM Modi.
“He is the most beautiful-looking man. He looks so nice. He is like an angel,” Trump said. He then added jokingly: “But actually he is as tough as a killer. He is a killer. But he looks so good, so he gets you by surprise.”
Trump Reaffirms America’s Support For India
The US President also reiterated his commitment towards India, promising that New Delhi would continue to have a strong partner in Washington during his tenure.
“As long as I am President, they have a great friend in the White House,” Trump said.
He further praised India’s global standing. “Everyone here loves India and they have tremendous respect for this man,” Trump said while gesturing towards PM Modi. In one of his strongest remarks, Trump also pledged support to India in case of external threats. “If Modi is the leader and India is attacked, we will be there to help them,” he said.
A Meeting Beyond Symbolism
The bilateral meeting showcased how India and the United States are increasingly aligning on critical global issues, including trade, maritime security, regional stability and strategic cooperation.
While PM Modi projected India’s priorities around peace, navigation security and protecting Indian seafarers, Trump highlighted trade expansion, India’s growing influence and America’s continued support for New Delhi.
The interaction once again underlined the strong personal chemistry between the two leaders and reflected the increasing importance of the India-US partnership in shaping global geopolitics in an uncertain world.
