The Indian-American community in the Chicago area came together in large numbers to celebrate the 250th anniversary of American Independence through a series of patriotic events organized by the Federation of Indian Associations (FIA-Chicago) and several prominent community organizations. The celebrations, held in Skokie and later at India Hub in Schaumburg, showcased the community’s commitment to democratic values, cultural heritage, and gratitude toward the sacrifices made for freedom.
More than 79 ethnic and business groups participated in the Skokie Independence Day parade, making it one of the largest multicultural gatherings commemorating the historic milestone. The event reflected the diversity of the United States while highlighting the active role played by the Indian diaspora in strengthening community bonds and civic engagement.
Strong Participation From Community Leaders
The celebrations witnessed the participation of several Indian-American community leaders representing social, cultural, and service organizations. FIA-Chicago organized the events in collaboration with ICNT, India Hub, Seva International, Ekal, Maharashtra Mandal, United Senior Pariwar, MAFS, UMAS, Care For Soul, Dynasty Care, Happy Hearts, and several other FIA member organizations.
Among those present were FIA President Hemant Patel, Trustee Rakesh Malhotra, ICNT President and FIA Vice President Rohit Joshi, FIA Executive Vice President Anil Singh, Treasurer Amar Upadhyay, Vice Presidents Bhavesh Shah and Joy Shah, Secretary Arvind Ankleshvaria, and Joint Treasurer Yashaswini Desai.
Representatives from partner organizations also joined the celebrations, including Sunil Shah, Richa Shah, Hitesh Gandhi, Hemendra Shah, Chetan Rege from Maharashtra Mandal, Dipti Desai from Seva International, Usha Kamaria, Virendra Patel, Jagdish Hingu, Devendra Patel, Phani Krishnanan, Nitin Surti, Harish Topiwala, Harshad Shah, Prakash Anturkar, Jay Kishan, Jyotindra Dalia, Dinesh Dalia, Seva volunteers, and many other community members.
Weather Fails to Dampen Patriotic Spirit
Despite challenging weather conditions, community members turned out in impressive numbers to participate in the celebrations.
The day began with temperatures reaching nearly 82 degrees Fahrenheit, while heavy thunderstorms later brought intense rainfall and flooding in several areas. Multiple roads experienced closures because of the adverse weather, creating difficulties for participants traveling to the venues.

However, organizers said the difficult conditions did not diminish the enthusiasm of attendees. Many families, volunteers, and community leaders chose to participate despite the temptation of spending the long holiday weekend at home or attending recreational activities.
The strong turnout was viewed as a tribute to the men and women who sacrificed their lives to secure freedom and democratic values.
Message of Freedom and Responsibility
During the celebrations, FIA President Hemant Patel emphasized that Independence Day should serve as more than a festive occasion. He said patriotic events offer an opportunity to remember the sacrifices that made freedom possible while encouraging citizens to protect democratic ideals for future generations.
Patel remarked that freedom comes at a significant cost and should never be taken for granted. He urged people to dedicate time to remembering those who fought for liberty, noting that preserving freedom requires continuous commitment and responsibility.
He also highlighted the importance of remaining vigilant against forces that could undermine democratic institutions, stressing that safeguarding democracy demands active participation from citizens. According to Patel, democratic societies must balance openness with the responsibility of protecting the freedoms they cherish.
Celebrating Shared Values
Organizers said the celebrations reflected the close relationship between the Indian-American community and the United States while also honoring their cultural roots.
The program highlighted how members of the Bharatiya community continue to maintain strong connections with India’s traditions, values, and heritage even as they actively contribute to American society.
Community leaders noted that Indian-Americans have become an integral part of the social, economic, educational, and cultural fabric of the United States. Through volunteer work, charitable initiatives, educational programs, and civic participation, they continue to strengthen the relationship between the two democracies.
The events also underscored the importance of multiculturalism, with participants from dozens of ethnic and business organizations joining together to celebrate America’s enduring commitment to liberty, equality, and opportunity.
A Celebration of Unity and Heritage
The dual celebrations in Skokie and Schaumburg concluded with messages of gratitude, unity, and service. Participants described the anniversary as a reminder that freedom is built upon sacrifice and sustained through responsible citizenship.
Organizers said the enthusiastic participation despite difficult weather demonstrated the resilience and dedication of the Indian-American community. The events also reinforced the belief that while Indian-Americans proudly contribute to their adopted homeland, they continue to cherish the cultural heritage, traditions, and values that connect them to Bharat.
As the United States commemorates 250 years of independence, community leaders expressed hope that future generations will continue to uphold democratic ideals, strengthen intercultural harmony, and preserve the spirit of freedom that unites people across backgrounds and nations.
