NEW DELHI: With concerns mounting over the possible impact of El Niño on agriculture and monsoon patterns, Union Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has assured that the Centre is fully prepared to safeguard the interests of farmers and is closely monitoring the situation across the country.
Chairing a high-level review meeting, Chouhan said that protecting farmers remains the government’s foremost priority and that all necessary measures would be taken to minimize the impact of any adverse weather conditions. He emphasized that the Centre is on alert and is continuously assessing developments related to El Niño and their potential effects on crop production.
The minister stated that agriculture forms the backbone of the country’s economy and that any challenge affecting farmers requires immediate attention. He directed senior officials to remain vigilant and maintain regular coordination with state governments to ensure timely action wherever needed.
During the meeting, officials reviewed weather forecasts, crop conditions, water availability and preparedness plans for the upcoming agricultural season. Chouhan instructed departments to strengthen contingency measures and ensure that farmers receive timely information, agricultural inputs and technical guidance in case of weather-related disruptions.
He noted that the government has developed mechanisms to respond quickly to changing climatic conditions and that all concerned agencies have been asked to remain ready. Special attention is being given to regions that could be more vulnerable to rainfall fluctuations or prolonged dry spells.
The Union Minister stressed that efforts must be focused on reducing risks to crop yields and farm incomes. He called for enhanced coordination between agricultural institutions, meteorological agencies and state administrations so that farmers can be provided with accurate advisories and support at the grassroots level.
Chouhan also reviewed the availability of seeds, fertilizers and other essential resources required for cultivation. He directed officials to ensure that supply chains remain smooth and that farmers do not face shortages during the sowing season. The minister said the government is committed to providing every possible assistance to the farming community in the event of any climate-related challenge.
Highlighting the importance of preparedness, he urged states to activate local-level monitoring systems and maintain constant communication with farmers. He said timely intervention and effective planning can significantly reduce the impact of adverse weather events.
“Farmers’ interests will be protected at all costs,” Chouhan said, reiterating the government’s commitment to supporting cultivators and ensuring agricultural stability. He added that the Centre would continue to review the situation regularly and take decisions based on scientific assessments and field reports.
The meeting reflects the government’s proactive approach towards addressing climate-related risks and strengthening the resilience of the agricultural sector. With uncertainty surrounding global weather patterns, the Centre is seeking to ensure that farmers remain protected and that food production is not adversely affected.
Officials were instructed to submit regular updates on preparedness measures and maintain close coordination with all stakeholders. The government believes that advance planning, effective monitoring and prompt action will help mitigate any challenges posed by El Niño and safeguard the livelihoods of millions of farmers across the country.
