The Bombay High Court on Thursday convicted former Tehelka editor-in-chief Tarun Tejpal in the 2013 rape case, overturning the Goa trial court’s acquittal delivered in 2021. The court also sentenced him to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment, bringing a major legal turnaround in one of India’s most closely watched sexual assault cases.
The judgment comes after a prolonged legal battle spanning more than a decade. The case had drawn nationwide attention because of Tejpal’s prominence in Indian journalism and the serious allegations made by a former junior colleague.
High Court Reverses Trial Court Verdict
The Bombay High Court found sufficient grounds to overturn the acquittal granted by the Goa sessions court in May 2021. The High Court held that the evidence and material placed before it justified a conviction in the case.
Following the conviction, the court sentenced Tejpal to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment. Reports said the High Court granted him two weeks to surrender before the authorities.
