KOLKATA: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday described the ongoing political transformation in West Bengal as one of the most significant changes witnessed by any Indian state since Independence. Addressing party workers and public representatives during his visit to the state, Shah said Bengal has entered a new phase in its political journey and that the shift reflects the aspirations of millions of people seeking a different model of governance.
According to Shah, the transformation is not limited to electoral politics but represents a broader change in public expectations regarding development, transparency and administration. He said the state now has an opportunity to move towards faster economic growth while preserving its rich cultural identity.
The Home Minister stressed that political change must ultimately translate into better governance and improved living standards for citizens. He urged party leaders and government functionaries to remain focused on public service and ensure that the confidence placed in them by voters is reflected in their work.
Development Must Remain the Top Priority
Highlighting the government’s priorities, Amit Shah said development should remain at the centre of every policy decision. He noted that West Bengal has immense potential in sectors such as manufacturing, trade, agriculture, tourism and education, and said these strengths should be fully utilised to generate employment and attract investment.
Shah stated that infrastructure development, improved connectivity and industrial expansion would play a crucial role in accelerating the state’s economic progress. The Home Minister also underlined the importance of coordination between the Centre and the state to ensure that national schemes and infrastructure projects are implemented effectively. He said the objective is to improve public services while creating new opportunities for economic growth.
Bengal’s Cultural Legacy Deserves Global Recognition
During his address, Shah paid tribute to West Bengal’s rich cultural and intellectual heritage. He said the state has historically been home to renowned writers, philosophers, artists, scientists and freedom fighters whose contributions have shaped modern India.
He observed that Bengal’s influence has extended far beyond its geographical boundaries and said efforts should now focus on restoring the state’s position as a global centre of culture, literature and creativity.
According to Shah, preserving heritage while embracing modern development is essential for ensuring balanced progress. He encouraged educational institutions, cultural organisations and citizens to work together in promoting Bengal’s traditions and values for future generations.
Border Security Remains a Key Focus
Apart from political issues, Amit Shah also reviewed border security arrangements during his visit. West Bengal shares a long international border, making effective surveillance and security coordination an important national priority.
The Home Minister announced that India’s proposed smart border management system would first be implemented in West Bengal. The initiative is expected to strengthen monitoring through advanced technology, modern surveillance systems and improved coordination among security agencies.
Officials briefed Shah on ongoing infrastructure projects, technological upgrades and measures aimed at enhancing border management. The Home Minister reiterated that national security remains one of the government’s foremost responsibilities and said continuous modernisation of security infrastructure is essential in addressing emerging challenges.
