KOLKATA: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday chaired a high-level review meeting on the law and order situation in West Bengal, announcing a series of measures aimed at strengthening the state’s internal security and policing framework. One of the key outcomes of the meeting was the decision to establish a Special Investigation Agency (SIA) on the lines of the National Investigation Agency (NIA), a move expected to enhance the state’s capability to investigate terrorism-related and other serious crimes.
The meeting was attended by senior government officials and top security personnel. According to Shah, discussions covered a wide range of issues, including women’s safety, border security, cybercrime, police modernisation and the removal of encroachments in sensitive border areas.
SIA to Boost Bengal’s Internal Security
A major highlight of the review was the announcement of the proposed Special Investigation Agency (SIA). The agency will function on the lines of the NIA and is expected to strengthen the state’s capacity to investigate terror-related incidents, organised crime and other serious offences requiring specialised expertise.
Officials believe that the formation of the SIA will improve coordination between state and central agencies while ensuring faster and more effective investigations into cases that have implications for national security.
The Home Ministry has been focusing on strengthening state-level security infrastructure across the country, and the proposed SIA is being viewed as another step towards enhancing intelligence gathering and investigative capabilities in West Bengal.
Amit Shah Stresses Women’s Safety
Addressing the outcome of the meeting, Amit Shah said that women’s security remained one of the government’s highest priorities. He announced that the West Bengal government would launch a rural women outreach programme aimed at creating greater awareness, improving access to safety mechanisms and strengthening support systems for women across villages.
Shah stated, “Today in Kolkata, I reviewed the law and order situation in West Bengal with senior officials. The state government will run a rural women outreach programme to further strengthen women’s safety.”
He added that improving public confidence in law enforcement and ensuring the safety of women were essential components of good governance.
Focus on Border Security and Encroachment Removal
The review meeting also placed significant emphasis on the security of West Bengal’s international borders. Officials discussed measures to remove illegal encroachments in border areas and improve surveillance to prevent infiltration, smuggling and other cross-border crimes.
West Bengal shares long international borders, making effective border management a key priority for security agencies. During the meeting, strategies were discussed to improve coordination between various law enforcement agencies operating in border districts.
Amit Shah underlined the importance of maintaining strong border security to protect national interests while ensuring peace and stability in the region.
Police Modernisation and Cyber Security Get Priority
Another major agenda of the meeting was the modernisation of the state’s police force. Discussions included upgrading policing infrastructure, improving technological capabilities and strengthening forensic support to enable faster investigations.

Cyber security also featured prominently during the review. With cyber fraud and digital crimes increasing across the country, officials discussed ways to enhance cyber policing, improve digital investigation capabilities and build stronger cyber response mechanisms.
According to Shah, efforts in these areas would continue at a faster pace to ensure that the state’s policing system remains prepared to tackle emerging security challenges.

During the meeting, Amit Shah emphasised that strengthening internal security requires coordinated efforts across multiple sectors.
He said, “The formation of the Special Investigation Agency (SIA) on the lines of the NIA will provide fresh momentum to West Bengal’s internal security.” He further added, “We also discussed moving ahead rapidly on removing encroachments in border areas, police modernisation and cyber security.”
The Home Minister stressed that effective policing, technological advancement and better coordination among agencies would help create a safer environment for citizens.
Security Review Signals Greater Focus on Law and Order
The review meeting reflects the Centre’s continued focus on improving security infrastructure and law enforcement mechanisms in West Bengal. The proposed SIA, combined with initiatives on women’s safety, police reforms, cyber security and border management, is expected to strengthen the state’s overall security framework.
