Russian President Vladimir Putin has strongly defended India’s independent foreign policy, stating that any sanctions or external pressure directed at New Delhi would ultimately “boomerang” on those imposing them. His remarks come amid continued global debate over India’s strategic and economic relations with Russia, particularly in the areas of energy, trade and defence cooperation.
Speaking during an interaction with international media representatives, Putin emphasized that India has consistently pursued policies based on its own national interests and is unlikely to alter its course because of outside pressure. He expressed confidence that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government would continue to make decisions that prioritize the country’s development, security and economic needs.
The Russian leader argued that attempts to use sanctions or political pressure against India would be counterproductive. According to him, India has demonstrated over the years that it is capable of maintaining an independent foreign policy while engaging with multiple global powers. He suggested that any effort to force New Delhi into changing its international partnerships could have negative consequences for those initiating such measures.

Referring to attempts by some countries to influence India’s position on Russia-related issues, Putin remarked that such efforts have largely failed. He stated that international actors have increasingly realized that putting pressure on Prime Minister Modi or the Indian government is not an effective strategy and can be harmful to broader international relations.
The Russian leader further pointed to the steady expansion of economic cooperation between the two countries. He expressed optimism that bilateral trade could reach the $100 billion mark in the coming years, driven by cooperation in energy, investments, manufacturing and other strategic sectors. Trade between India and Russia has grown significantly in recent years, supported by strong demand for energy supplies and increasing business engagement.
Putin also highlighted India’s growing role in global affairs, describing the country as an important partner in emerging international platforms such as BRICS. He noted that nations of the Global South are playing a larger role in shaping the future global economic order and acknowledged India’s contribution to technology, innovation and economic development.
The remarks are being viewed as another indication of Moscow’s commitment to maintaining close ties with New Delhi despite changing geopolitical dynamics.
