Israel has announced plans to honour Indian airline captain Smit Machchhar with one of its highest civilian bravery awards, recognising his extraordinary courage during a mid-air emergency that threatened the lives of 174 people aboard a flydubai aircraft.
Israeli President Isaac Herzog announced that Machchhar would receive the Presidential Award for Civil Heroism once his health improves sufficiently. The announcement came during a ceremony in Jerusalem where six Israeli passengers were honoured for their decisive intervention in the same incident.
The recognition highlights the Indian pilot’s determination and professional composure during an alleged attack inside the cockpit of flight FZ1073, which was travelling towards Tel Aviv. Despite sustaining serious injuries, Machchhar managed to take a critical action that enabled passengers to intervene and helped avert a potentially devastating disaster.
Israel Recognises Captain Smit Machchhar’s Extraordinary Courage
President Herzog praised Machchhar for demonstrating exceptional bravery and professionalism under life-threatening circumstances. He expressed his wishes for the captain’s complete recovery and said he would personally present the award on behalf of the Israeli people when the pilot was well enough.
The Israeli president made clear that Machchhar’s actions deserved recognition alongside those of the Israeli passengers who helped bring the emergency under control.
The award celebrates civilians who demonstrate exceptional courage while putting themselves at risk to protect and save others. Established after the Hamas-led attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, the honour recognises people whose actions reflect extraordinary humanity in moments of danger.
Machchhar’s planned recognition also carries significance for India-Israel relations, as an Indian professional is being honoured for helping protect passengers travelling to Israel. Six Israeli Passengers Honoured for Their Life-Saving Intervention
During the Jerusalem ceremony, six Israeli civilians received the Presidential Medal for Civilian Heroism for their roles in responding to the cockpit emergency.

Those honoured were Tali Manes, Zvika Manes, Yaniv Hayoun, Dr Shota Musayev, Asaf Rajuan and Or Pardilov.
According to reports, Tali Manes was among the first to raise the alarm. Yaniv Hayoun, Zvika Manes, Or Pardilov and Asaf Rajuan helped restrain the co-pilot after the alleged attack, while Dr Musayev provided medical assistance to the injured captain.
Their intervention was crucial in containing the crisis. The Israeli president also acknowledged the contribution of other passengers and the pilots who subsequently took control of the aircraft.
The incident demonstrated how the combined efforts of the flight crew and passengers can become decisive when an emergency threatens the safety of everyone on board.
What Happened Aboard Flydubai Flight FZ1073?
The incident occurred in late September aboard flydubai flight FZ1073, which was carrying 174 people towards Israel.
According to reports, the co-pilot, identified as Omani national Hamam al-Hammami, allegedly attacked Captain Machchhar inside the cockpit with a crash axe and attempted to take control of the aircraft.
As the situation escalated, the aircraft reportedly descended rapidly from an altitude of approximately 34,000 feet, triggering a serious aviation emergency.
Despite his injuries, Machchhar managed to open the cockpit door. This allowed passengers to enter and help overpower the co-pilot, preventing the situation from escalating further.
Two off-duty pilots who were travelling aboard the aircraft subsequently took control of the plane. The flight was diverted and made an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.
The safe landing prevented the incident from turning into a much larger tragedy. The precise circumstances and motives behind the alleged attack remain matters for investigation.
Captain Machchhar Continues Recovery in Abu Dhabi
Following the emergency landing, Machchhar initially received medical treatment in Saudi Arabia before being transferred to Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates for further care.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs has said that the Indian embassy in the UAE is maintaining contact with the captain, his family and hospital authorities. According to the ministry’s latest reported update, he was recovering and responding positively to treatment.
His condition has drawn attention in India, where his actions have been widely recognised as an example of courage, professional responsibility of and concern for human life.

The episode also prompted discussions about cockpit security, aviation safety procedures and the importance of effective emergency responses when a threat develops during a flight.
Netanyahu Invites Indian Pilot to Israel’s Independence Day Celebrations
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has also praised Machchhar’s actions and invited him, along with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to participate in Israel’s Independence Day celebrations.
Netanyahu described the invitation as a special honour, noting that the ceremony traditionally recognises Israeli citizens. His gesture reflected the appreciation expressed by Israeli leaders for the Indian captain’s role in protecting the passengers.
The proposed award from President Herzog adds another layer of recognition to the international response to the incident. It also underscores the cooperation and solidarity demonstrated by people from different nationalities during a life-threatening emergency.
A Powerful Story of Courage Beyond National Boundaries
Captain Smit Machchhar’s story has emerged as a compelling example of bravery under extreme pressure. Faced with a dangerous situation and serious injuries, he took action that enabled others to intervene and helped protect the lives of those aboard the aircraft.
The six Israeli passengers, the off-duty pilots and other members of the flight community also played important roles in bringing the crisis to an end.
While investigators continue to examine the incident and establish the full circumstances, Israel’s decision to honour Machchhar recognises the human courage displayed during the emergency.
For India, the proposed award is a moment of international recognition for an Indian pilot whose actions helped avert a potential disaster. For the passengers and their families, the successful landing represents the most important outcome: the opportunity for everyone aboard to survive a frightening ordeal.
The planned presentation of the Presidential Award for Civil Heroism will formally acknowledge Machchhar’s contribution once he has recovered sufficiently, placing his actions among those recognised by Israel for exceptional civilian bravery.
