A passenger ferry carrying 267 people capsized and sank off the coast of northern Cyprus on Sunday, triggering a massive search-and-rescue operation in the eastern Mediterranean. At least seven people have died and 23 others remain missing, according to the latest reports, while hundreds have been pulled from the sea.
The disaster occurred several nautical miles off Kyrenia, also known as Girne, as the vessel was travelling towards the Turkish port of Tasucu in Mersin province. Authorities said the ferry began taking on water shortly after leaving Kyrenia, leaving passengers and crew members scrambling for safety.
Ferry Capsizes Shortly After Leaving Kyrenia
The vessel, identified as Filo Jet, departed Kyrenia at around 12:30 p.m. local time on Sunday. It was carrying 259 passengers and eight crew members when the emergency unfolded.
According to initial information released by authorities, the ferry started taking on water approximately four nautical miles from the coast. The exact reason why the vessel began flooding has not yet been conclusively established.
The rapidly developing situation prompted an immediate distress response. Coast guard vessels, helicopters and civilian boats were sent to the area as authorities raced against time to rescue passengers trapped in the water or on the overturned vessel.
Witness footage showed people in life jackets in the Mediterranean waters, with some survivors reportedly clinging to the overturned hull while waiting for rescue teams to reach them.
Seven Confirmed Dead, 23 Still Missing
The death toll rose to at least seven, while authorities said 23 people remained unaccounted for. A large number of passengers were rescued during the emergency operation, with reports indicating that 237 people had been brought to safety by the latest update.
