The All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA), New Delhi, has launched the Garbhini Mitra Course for the 2026–2027 academic session, marking a significant step towards developing trained support personnel for maternal wellness through an Ayurveda-based approach. The six-month programme is designed to provide participants with practical skills in health education, lifestyle guidance and community-level support for women during pregnancy and the postnatal period.
The AIIA, an autonomous premier institution under the Ministry of Ayush, has structured the programme to combine traditional Ayurvedic knowledge with essential healthcare-support practices. The initiative focuses on strengthening the availability of trained personnel who can assist pregnant women while ensuring that clinical care continues to remain under qualified medical professionals.
Six-Month Offline Training Programme
The Garbhini Mitra Course will be conducted offline at the AIIA campus in Sarita Vihar, New Delhi. The programme will run for six months, with classes scheduled from Monday to Friday between 3:00 PM and 5:00 PM.
The curriculum is centred around key Ayurvedic concepts related to maternal care, including Garbhini Paricharya, which deals with antenatal care; Sutika Paricharya, concerning postnatal care; and Garbhadhana Vidhi, which relates to pre-conceptional care.
Through classroom learning and practical training, participants will be introduced to various aspects of maternal and newborn wellness.
Focus on Pregnancy Diet, Yoga and Emotional Support
A major component of the programme is trimester-specific guidance on diet and lifestyle. Participants will learn how to provide appropriate wellness support during different stages of pregnancy while understanding the importance of safe and responsible practices.

The course also includes training in pregnancy-safe yoga, emotional support during labour and newborn massage. These skills are intended to help trained personnel provide supportive care to mothers and families within their defined responsibilities.
Alongside Ayurveda-based practices, the programme incorporates basic healthcare and safety modules. Participants will receive training in basic life support protocols, infection prevention, sanitisation, biomedical waste management and workplace safety.
Eligibility Criteria Announced
The AIIA has kept the eligibility requirements accessible to students who have completed their senior secondary education. Candidates who have passed the Senior Secondary (10+2) examination from any recognised board in India can apply for the programme.
Applicants must be at least 18 years old. Students who are awaiting their Class 12 results can also submit provisional applications, subject to the applicable admission requirements.
The course will have 20 students per batch, allowing the institute to maintain a focused training environment and provide participants with practical exposure.
New Career Opportunities in Maternal Wellness
Successful completion of the programme could open opportunities for candidates in several support-oriented roles. Graduates may work as Garbhini Mitra Assistants, Prenatal and Postnatal Care Assistants, Antenatal Wellness Guides and Maternal Health Support Workers.

Potential work settings include Ayush centres, maternity clinics, non-governmental organisations, community health initiatives and wellness institutions.
The programme is therefore positioned not only as a skill-development initiative but also as a potential pathway for young people seeking careers in maternal wellness and community healthcare support.
Clinical Care Remains Essential
The AIIA has emphasised that the Garbhini Mitra initiative is intended to complement and not replace clinical antenatal care. Pregnant women must continue to receive routine medical check-ups and appropriate diagnostic monitoring throughout pregnancy.
Essential clinical parameters, including blood pressure and haemoglobin levels, require regular monitoring by qualified healthcare professionals.
Trained Garbhini Mitras are expected to function within a supportive role. One of their important responsibilities will be recognising potential warning signs and helping women access timely medical attention when required. Referral to qualified doctors and appropriate healthcare facilities remains critical whenever a complication or concerning symptom is identified.
Applications Open Until August 31
The admission process for the 2026–2027 Garbhini Mitra Course is currently underway. Interested candidates are required to complete the application process within the stipulated timeline.
The last date for submitting applications is August 31, 2026.
The initiative reflects a broader effort to develop structured healthcare-support skills by combining traditional knowledge systems with practical safety and wellness training. By preparing trained personnel to provide responsible support during pregnancy and the postnatal period, AIIA aims to strengthen community-level maternal wellness services while maintaining the central role of professional medical care.
Candidates interested in the programme are advised to consult the official Academic Brochure – Garbhini Mitra for detailed information regarding admission, eligibility, course structure and application procedures.
