Prataprao Jadhav has spearheaded a major push to strengthen the quality, standardisation and global credibility of India’s traditional medicines, with the Ministry of Ayush and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare renewing their cooperation under the “One Herb, One Standard” initiative.
The renewed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Pharmacopoeia Commission for Indian Medicine & Homoeopathy (PCIM&H) and the Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC) will remain in force for another three years.
The agreement aims to establish uniform, scientifically robust and reliable quality standards for medicinal plants used across Ayurveda, Siddha, Sowa-Rigpa, Unani and Homoeopathy.
Prataprao Jadhav Calls For Stronger Quality Standards
Addressing the gathering at Kartavya Bhavan in New Delhi, Prataprao Jadhav emphasised the importance of scientifically developed standards for medicinal plants and traditional medicines.
Jadhav said India’s traditional systems of medicine are an integral part of the country’s rich knowledge traditions and medicinal plant heritage. He stressed that ensuring the quality, purity and standardisation of medicines is essential to improving their credibility and strengthening public confidence.
The minister also highlighted the need for greater coordination between institutions involved in research, standardisation, manufacturing and regulation.
‘One Herb, One Standard’ Aims To End Ambiguity
The One Herb, One Standard initiative seeks to create a common, clear and scientifically reliable benchmark for the same medicinal plant used across different systems of medicine.
Jadhav said harmonised standards could help reduce confusion among stakeholders and establish a stronger framework for the standardisation of medicinal plants.
The approach is expected to benefit manufacturers, researchers, exporters, laboratories and regulatory institutions by creating greater clarity around quality requirements.
Indian Standards To Align With Global Benchmarks
Under the renewed partnership, monographs will consider both Indian standards and international quality requirements.

The government said aligning Indian standards with global benchmarks can improve the quality and reliability of Indian medicinal plants and traditional medicine products.
It could also support their wider acceptance in international markets by providing globally relevant and scientifically backed quality parameters.
Three-Year MoU To Expand Standardisation
The renewed MoU will continue inter-ministerial cooperation for another three years.
The partnership will focus on developing uniform and scientifically robust quality standards for single drugs of plant origin used in Ayurveda, Siddha, Sowa-Rigpa, Unani and Homoeopathy.
The collaboration combines the scientific and standard-setting expertise of PCIM&H and IPC to create a more coordinated framework for botanical standardisation.
50 Medicinal Plant Monographs Developed Since 2022
The latest agreement builds on the MoU initiated in 2022.
During the first phase, 50 monographs of medicinal plants were successfully developed under the One Herb, One Standard concept.
The renewed partnership will further expand this framework by harmonising standards for medicinal plants used across different traditional medicine systems.
The move is expected to reduce ambiguity and strengthen quality assurance throughout the traditional medicine sector.
Focus On Ease Of Doing Business
The initiative is also expected to support Ease of Doing Business by making quality and regulatory processes more streamlined, transparent and effective.
Clearer standards could help manufacturers, exporters, testing laboratories and regulatory bodies understand requirements more efficiently.
This could strengthen the overall ecosystem for the development and international trade of traditional medicine products.
Protecting India’s Medicinal Heritage
Jadhav also highlighted the importance of safeguarding India’s rich biodiversity and traditional medicinal heritage.
The initiative seeks to combine India’s traditional knowledge of medicinal plants with modern scientific approaches to quality assessment and standardisation.
By creating reliable standards, the government aims to strengthen both the domestic credibility and international reputation of Indian traditional medicines.

The renewal of the MoU reaffirms the commitment of PCIM&H and IPC to scientific excellence, quality, reliability and global acceptance of India’s traditional medicine systems.
With Prataprao Jadhav stressing harmonised standards and international benchmarks, the renewed partnership is expected to give fresh momentum to medicinal plant standardisation.
