Iran Condemns Trump’s Remarks
Iran has strongly criticised US President Donald Trump after he suggested that the remaining Iranian leadership could be eliminated with “one shot” while attending the funeral ceremonies of former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Tehran described the statement as offensive and accused Trump of displaying a lack of “civilisation, history and honour.”
The comments have added fresh strain to already fragile relations between Washington and Tehran, even as both sides have indicated that diplomatic engagement has not been completely ruled out.
What Trump Said
Speaking during an interview with Axios, Trump said he was surprised by the massive crowds mourning Ali Khamenei, claiming he had expected widespread public resentment toward the late Iranian leader.
Questioning the authenticity of the public grief, Trump remarked that “maybe it’s fake tears.” He then claimed that the United States had the capability to eliminate Iran’s remaining leadership gathered for the funeral with “one shot,” but insisted that such action would not be taken because Washington still wanted to preserve the possibility of negotiating with Tehran.
Trump also maintained that Iran remained interested in reaching an agreement with the United States despite the recent conflict.
Tehran Hits Back
Iranian officials responded swiftly, rejecting Trump’s comments as provocative and disrespectful.
In an official statement, Tehran argued that while individuals may be killed, their beliefs and ideals cannot be destroyed. Iranian leaders accused Trump of demonstrating neither respect for international norms nor understanding of Iran’s historical and cultural identity.
Officials portrayed the remarks as another example of hostile rhetoric aimed at intimidating the Islamic Republic while insisting that such threats would not alter Iran’s political direction.

Ali Khamenei’s funeral has attracted enormous crowds across Iran, with mourners gathering in Tehran to pay their final respects.
