NEW DELHI: A fresh controversy has emerged after Bhagwan Mahavir Deshna Foundation formally objected to comments allegedly made by former Union Minister regarding the use of peacock feather whisks, known as Mayur Picchhi, by Digambar Jain monks. The organisation has sent an official letter expressing concern that the remarks have deeply hurt the sentiments of the Jain community and millions of followers associated with India’s religious and cultural traditions.
According to the Foundation, the statements have particularly affected members of the Digambar Jain sect, who consider the peacock feather whisk an integral part of their spiritual discipline and religious practice. The organisation urged that public comments on such sensitive matters should be made only after proper consultation and factual verification.
Foundation Defends Religious Practice and Explains Significance
Bhagwan Mahavir Deshna Foundation Director Manoj Kumar Jain clarified that the peacock feather whisk used by Digambar Jain monks is not obtained through harm to birds. Instead, it is made exclusively from naturally shed peacock feathers collected without causing injury to the national bird.
The Foundation explained that the whisk serves an important spiritual purpose within Jainism. Digambar monks use it to gently remove insects and other tiny living beings from their path while walking or sitting. This practice reflects one of the central teachings of Jain philosophy — Ahimsa, or complete non-violence towards all forms of life.
The letter stated that portraying the practice incorrectly could create confusion among the public and potentially damage the image of an ancient religious tradition that is fundamentally based on compassion and peaceful coexistence.
Representatives of the Foundation stressed that religious customs that have been followed for centuries should be understood in their proper context before being discussed in public forums.
Peacock Feather Holds Wider Cultural and Spiritual Importance
The Foundation also highlighted that the significance of peacock feathers extends beyond Jain traditions and occupies an important place in India’s broader spiritual heritage.
It pointed out that peacock feathers are closely associated with , whose crown traditionally features a peacock feather and symbolizes divinity, wisdom and cultural identity. Because of this wider association, any unverified allegations surrounding the use of peacock feathers can inadvertently affect the sentiments of a larger section of society.
The organisation argued that religious symbols often carry meanings that transcend individual communities and therefore require careful handling in public discourse. It added that comments made without supporting evidence could create unnecessary misunderstanding and social friction.
The Foundation emphasised that preserving India’s cultural diversity requires sensitivity towards traditions that have been practised peacefully for generations.
Appeal for Dialogue and Public Clarification
While strongly objecting to the remarks, the letter maintained a respectful tone towards Maneka Gandhi and acknowledged her long-standing contributions to animal welfare, environmental conservation and the protection of wildlife.
However, the Foundation urged her to re-examine her statement and publicly withdraw it if it is found to be factually incorrect or misleading. It further requested that an expression of regret be issued in order to address the concerns and emotions of the Jain community and devotees.
The organisation suggested that future discussions concerning religious customs should involve consultations with representatives of the concerned faith groups, scholars and subject experts. According to the Foundation, such engagement would help avoid misunderstandings and foster informed discussions.
The letter also underlined that constructive dialogue between public figures and religious communities can strengthen social trust and mutual respect rather than creating divisions.
