The earthquake, centered near the coastal town of Puerto Madero, triggered emergency response measures as authorities assessed the situation and urged residents to stay away from beaches and low-lying coastal areas.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake occurred offshore near Puerto Madero at a relatively shallow depth, making the shaking widely felt across southern Mexico and several Central American countries. Initial readings placed the quake at magnitude 7.4, although some monitoring agencies later revised the estimate slightly. Despite the revision, officials emphasized that the earthquake was strong enough to pose a potential tsunami hazard and generate significant aftershocks.

Following the earthquake, the U.S. Tsunami Warning System issued a tsunami threat for coastlines within approximately 300 kilometers of the epicenter.
