The United States has formally announced the phased closure of its Consulate General in Peshawar, Pakistan, citing concerns over the safety of its diplomatic personnel. The move marks a significant change in Washington’s diplomatic presence in the country’s northwestern region, with all official responsibilities for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa now being handled by the US Embassy in Islamabad.

US Department of State posted on X, “The US Department of State is announcing the phased closure of the US Consulate General in Peshawar. Responsibility for diplomatic engagement with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will transfer to the US Embassy in Islamabad. This decision reflects our commitment to the safety of our diplomatic personnel and efficient resource management.”
Safety of Diplomatic Personnel Cited
In an official statement, the US Department of State said that the phased closure reflects its commitment to safeguarding diplomatic personnel. It added that diplomatic engagement with the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province will continue seamlessly through the US Embassy in Islamabad.
The department emphasized that while the physical presence in Peshawar is ending, the United States remains committed to working with Pakistani authorities on regional security, economic cooperation, public diplomacy, education, and development initiatives.
Officials also noted that consular services and diplomatic coordination would continue without interruption through alternative channels managed from Islamabad.
Diplomatic Engagement to Continue
The US government clarified that the closure does not alter its broader policy objectives in Pakistan. Washington said it remains focused on strengthening bilateral ties, supporting economic development, promoting educational exchanges, and cooperating on regional stability.
