KOLKATA: An under-construction warehouse in West Kolkata collapsed on Wednesday, triggering a major rescue operation involving multiple emergency agencies. The sudden structural failure sent shockwaves across the area and raised concerns about the safety standards being followed at large construction sites in urban centres.

Authorities immediately launched an extensive search-and-rescue mission after reports emerged that several people could still be trapped under the rubble. Teams from the police, fire brigade, state disaster management authorities, and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) were rushed to the location.

Massive Rescue Operation Underway

Rescue workers have been working continuously to clear the debris and search for survivors. Additional NDRF battalions were deployed to strengthen the operation due to the complexity of the collapse and the possibility that multiple workers remained inside the structure when it came down.

Officials said specialised rescue equipment, including cranes, excavators, gas cutters and concrete-breaking tools, are being used to carefully remove the debris. Teams are proceeding cautiously to avoid causing secondary collapses that could endanger survivors and rescue personnel.

Emergency medical units and ambulances have also been stationed near the site to provide immediate treatment to rescued individuals and transport injured people to nearby hospitals if required.

Number of Trapped Persons Yet to Be Confirmed

Authorities are still trying to determine the exact number of workers who were present at the construction site at the time of the accident. Investigators are collecting information from contractors, labour supervisors and eyewitnesses to establish a clear picture.

Officials said that the absence of a confirmed attendance record has made it difficult to accurately estimate how many people could still be trapped under the debris.

Family members of workers gathered near the site seeking information, while police personnel created security barricades to manage crowds and facilitate uninterrupted rescue operations.

Disaster Management Teams Bring Heavy Machinery

As the operation expanded, disaster management teams brought in additional heavy machinery to accelerate the process of debris removal. However, authorities stressed that speed would not compromise safety.

Rescuers are using advanced search techniques, including thermal imaging devices and specialised detection equipment, to identify signs of life beneath the collapsed sections.

Temporary command centres have also been established to coordinate communication among the various agencies involved in the operation.

Investigation Into Structural Failure Begins

While rescue operations remain the immediate priority, authorities have launched a parallel investigation to determine what caused the under-construction warehouse to collapse.

Investigators are expected to examine several aspects, including:

  • The quality of construction materials used.
  • Structural engineering designs and load-bearing capacity.
  • Compliance with building regulations.
  • Safety measures followed during construction.
  • Official approvals and inspection records.

Experts say such investigations are essential to identify any lapses and fix accountability if negligence is discovered.

Growing Concerns Over Construction Safety

The incident has once again highlighted concerns regarding construction safety in rapidly expanding metropolitan regions.

Urban development projects have increased significantly in recent years, but experts have repeatedly warned that strict enforcement of safety regulations must accompany growth.

Construction sites are required to undergo regular inspections and maintain adequate safety measures for workers. Any deviation from approved designs, poor-quality materials or insufficient supervision can significantly increase the risk of structural failures.

Labour rights groups have also emphasised the need for better worker protection mechanisms, proper emergency preparedness and transparent record-keeping at construction sites.

Authorities Urge Public to Stay Away

Local authorities have appealed to residents to avoid gathering near the accident site so that rescue personnel can operate without obstruction.

Officials said rescue efforts may continue through the night until every missing individual is accounted for. Senior state authorities are continuously monitoring developments and coordinating with all agencies involved.

As the operation progresses, the focus remains on saving lives and ensuring that those trapped receive immediate assistance.

The tragic incident serves as a reminder of the importance of strict safety standards, regular inspections and accountability in the construction sector to prevent similar disasters in the future.
