WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has vowed that the United States will respond after claiming that Iran shot down a US Army Apache helicopter while it was conducting a patrol mission over the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. The incident has added fresh tension to an already fragile security situation in the Middle East.

In a statement posted on social media, Trump said he had been informed by the US military that Iranian forces targeted and brought down one of America’s “highly sophisticated Apache helicopters” during an overnight patrol mission. Stressing the seriousness of the incident, he declared that the United States “must, of necessity, respond” to the attack.

“I have just been informed by our Great Military that last night the Iranians shot down one of our highly sophisticated Apache Helicopters while patrolling over the Strait of Hormuz. There were two pilots involved, both are safe and uninjured. Nevertheless, the United States must, of necessity, respond to this attack. Thank you for your attention to this matter!” Trump said in a post on Truth Social.

Trump’s statement came after reports that an American Apache attack helicopter was allegedly brought down during a patrol mission over the strategically significant Strait of Hormuz. While confirming that both pilots survived without injuries, the US President described the incident as a direct attack on American military assets and signaled that Washington would take action in response.

The remarks have heightened concerns about a possible escalation in tensions between the United States and Iran, particularly as the Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical maritime routes for global energy supplies. Trump did not specify what form the US response would take, but his comments underscored the seriousness with which his administration views the alleged attack. The incident is expected to draw close attention from international allies and security analysts monitoring developments in the Gulf region.

The Apache helicopter was reportedly operating over the Strait of Hormuz, a vital maritime route through which a significant share of the world’s oil shipments pass. The region has remained highly sensitive amid ongoing tensions involving Iran, Israel and the United States.

While Trump initially provided limited details about the incident, subsequent reports indicated that the helicopter’s two crew members survived. US military officials said the pilots were rescued after the aircraft went down near the waters off Oman. The rescue operation reportedly involved advanced unmanned naval technology deployed by the US Navy.

Earlier in the day, Trump had told reporters that the pilots were safe and that a detailed report on the helicopter incident would be released soon. He emphasized that there were no reported injuries among the crew members.

The reported downing of the Apache helicopter comes at a delicate moment, with Washington and Tehran engaged in discussions aimed at reducing regional tensions. Trump has repeatedly expressed optimism about the possibility of reaching a broader agreement with Iran, describing negotiations as being in their final stages. However, the helicopter incident threatens to complicate those diplomatic efforts.

Military analysts view the Apache as one of the US Army’s most advanced attack helicopters, designed for reconnaissance and combat missions. If confirmed as a hostile shootdown, the incident would represent a significant escalation and could prompt a military or diplomatic response from Washington.

Neither the White House nor the Pentagon has yet provided comprehensive details regarding the circumstances surrounding the helicopter’s loss. Iran has also not immediately issued an official response to Trump’s allegations.

The latest development underscores the continuing volatility in the Gulf region, where military activity, shipping security concerns and diplomatic negotiations remain closely intertwined. With Trump publicly promising a response, international attention is now focused on Washington’s next move and its potential impact on regional stability.
