NEW DELHI: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday launched a sharp attack on the Opposition over the ongoing students protests in Delhi linked to the NEET examination controversy, alleging that political parties were using students as instruments to advance their political agenda. Speaking amid continued disruptions in Parliament, Singh expressed concern over the escalating demonstrations and appealed for responsible political conduct.
His remarks came as both Houses of Parliament witnessed repeated interruptions over demands by Opposition parties for accountability in connection with the alleged irregularities surrounding the NEET examination.
“Students Should Not Be Used for Politics”
Addressing the issue, Rajnath Singh said that students represent the future of the nation and should never become tools in political battles. According to the Defence Minister, the protests have increasingly taken a political turn instead of focusing on constructive discussions regarding examination reforms.
He stated that while every student has the democratic right to raise genuine concerns, political organisations should refrain from exploiting young people for partisan objectives. Singh maintained that such actions divert attention from finding meaningful solutions to the issues affecting students.
The minister stressed that education-related concerns deserve serious debate and policy reforms rather than political confrontation on the streets.
Parliament Faces Repeated Disruptions
The remarks came during another turbulent day in Parliament, where Opposition members continued to raise slogans and demand discussions over the NEET controversy. Proceedings in both Houses were affected as lawmakers pressed for accountability and further government action.
The ongoing standoff has become one of the major political flashpoints of the Monsoon Session. Opposition parties have accused the government of failing to protect the integrity of competitive examinations and have demanded stronger action against those responsible for alleged irregularities.
The government, however, has maintained that it remains open to discussing the issue in Parliament while accusing the Opposition of attempting to create disruption rather than engaging in constructive debate.
BJP Defends Government’s Stand
The Bharatiya Janata Party has consistently argued that the Centre has already initiated several corrective measures regarding examination reforms. BJP leaders have maintained that investigations are underway and that the government is committed to ensuring transparency and accountability in the examination system.
Rajnath Singh reiterated that the welfare of students should remain the primary focus and urged political parties to avoid actions that could increase anxiety among young aspirants preparing for competitive examinations.
According to him, meaningful reforms can only emerge through dialogue and institutional action rather than political mobilisation involving students.
Opposition Continues to Demand Accountability
Opposition leaders have maintained pressure on the government over alleged examination irregularities, insisting that the matter requires greater accountability. They have demanded comprehensive reforms to restore confidence among students and their families.
The controversy has sparked demonstrations in several locations, with student groups and political organisations participating in protests demanding transparency and fairness in the examination process.
The issue has now become one of the dominant subjects of political debate during the Monsoon Session, with repeated adjournments affecting parliamentary business.
Government Calls for Constructive Discussion
The Centre has reiterated its willingness to discuss the issue in Parliament while emphasising that reforms are already being pursued. Ministers have argued that disruptions inside and outside Parliament delay meaningful legislative discussions that could address student concerns.
Rajnath Singh concluded by appealing to all political parties to place the interests of students above political considerations. He said the country’s youth deserve confidence in the education system and should not be drawn into political confrontations.
As the Monsoon Session continues, the NEET controversy is expected to remain a major issue, with both the government and the Opposition standing firm on their respective positions regarding accountability, reforms and the handling of student protests.
