NEW DELHI: J.P. Nadda on Tuesday accused the Opposition of engaging in “anti-democratic conduct” over its protests on the NEET issue, asserting that the Centre is fully prepared for a comprehensive discussion in Parliament. The former BJP national president and Rajya Sabha Leader Nadda said the government has never shied away from debating matters of public importance and urged Opposition parties to allow Parliament to function.
His remarks came as the second day of the Monsoon Session witnessed fresh disruptions in the Lok Sabha. Opposition members continued their protests over the NEET controversy, leading to repeated adjournments before the House was eventually adjourned without conducting substantial legislative business.
Nadda attacks Opposition over repeated disruptions
Addressing the media after the parliamentary disruptions, J.P. Nadda accused Opposition parties of deliberately stalling the functioning of Parliament despite the government’s willingness to debate the concerns surrounding NEET.
He described the repeated protests inside and outside Parliament as an attempt to obstruct democratic institutions rather than engage in meaningful debate. According to Nadda, Parliament is the appropriate platform to raise issues of national importance, and continuous disruptions prevent lawmakers from fulfilling their responsibilities.
He maintained that the government has never shied away from discussing public concerns and remains open to addressing all questions related to the examination issue through parliamentary procedures.
Centre says it is prepared for a discussion
The government reiterated that it is fully prepared for a structured debate on the NEET controversy. BJP leaders stated that Parliament offers the right forum for discussing examination reforms, student concerns and future policy measures.
The Centre argued that if the Opposition genuinely seeks answers, it should participate in parliamentary discussions instead of creating disruptions that halt legislative business.
Government representatives also pointed out that several legislative matters are pending during the Monsoon Session and urged all parties to ensure the smooth functioning of both Houses.
Opposition continues protest over NEET issue
Opposition parties intensified their protest over alleged irregularities in the NEET examination and the police action against student demonstrators.
Members of the INDIA bloc staged protests inside Parliament while demanding accountability from the government. Several MPs wore black clothing as a symbolic protest and raised slogans seeking justice for students.
The Opposition has demanded a detailed statement from Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Parliament and has also called for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the handling of the controversy.
Lok Sabha adjourned amid persistent protests
The Lok Sabha witnessed repeated interruptions as Opposition members entered the Well of the House and continued raising slogans.
Despite appeals from the Chair to maintain order, the protests continued, forcing repeated adjournments before the House was eventually adjourned for the day.
The disruptions also affected legislative business scheduled for the session, adding to concerns over the productivity of Parliament during the ongoing Monsoon Session. Similar scenes were witnessed in the Rajya Sabha, where proceedings also faced interruptions due to Opposition protests.
Political battle over students’ concerns
The NEET controversy has emerged as one of the biggest political flashpoints of the current parliamentary session. While the Opposition alleges that the government has failed to safeguard the integrity of competitive examinations, the ruling BJP maintains that reforms are being undertaken and that Parliament should be used for constructive discussion.
BJP leaders have accused the Congress and its allies of politicising student concerns for electoral gains. On the other hand, Opposition parties insist that accountability at the highest level is necessary to restore confidence among students and parents.
