A tragic building collapse in Delhi’s Satya Niketan area on Sunday left at least five people dead and several others injured, triggering an intensive rescue operation involving multiple emergency and disaster-response agencies. The incident, which occurred in a densely populated area near Delhi University’s South Campus, also raised concerns over the safety of student accommodation and ongoing construction work.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep distress over the incident, while Union Home Minister Amit Shah reviewed the situation with senior Delhi officials and assured that rescue operations were being conducted on an urgent basis.
PM Modi Expresses Grief Over Satya Niketan Tragedy
Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the deaths and expressed concern for those injured in the collapse.
“The collapse of a building at Satya Niketan, Delhi is distressing. Condolences to those who lost their loved ones. Praying for the speedy recovery of the injured. Authorities are working at the site and assisting those affected in the mishap,” PM Modi said.
The Prime Minister’s remarks came as rescue teams continued to work through the debris in an effort to locate anyone who could still be trapped inside the collapsed structure.
The tragedy has caused widespread concern because the building was being used as a paying guest accommodation, with students among those believed to have been inside when the structure suddenly gave way.
Amit Shah Reviews Rescue Operation
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also expressed his distress over the incident and spoke with senior officials to assess the situation.
Shah said he had spoken with Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, the Commissioner of Police, Delhi, and the Director General of the National Disaster Response Force.
“Deeply distressed by the collapse of a building at Satya Niketan in Delhi,” Shah said, adding that the local administration and the NDRF were conducting intensive rescue operations in close coordination.
He also said injured victims were being provided with necessary medical assistance and prayed for their speedy recovery.
The Home Minister cancelled a scheduled event in Goa after learning about the collapse, according to updates from the live coverage.
Five-Storey PG Building Collapses
According to Delhi Police, the collapsed structure was around 40–50 years old and consisted of a basement and five upper floors. It was being used as a PG accommodation.

Police said repair work was underway in the basement when the building collapsed. The exact cause of the structural failure is being investigated, while questions have emerged over whether construction or renovation work may have weakened the structure.
The collapse occurred in the afternoon, with emergency services receiving information shortly after 1.30 pm. Delhi Fire Services and other response teams were quickly mobilised to the site.
NDRF, Fire Services Lead Search Operation
A large-scale rescue operation was launched immediately after the collapse. Teams from the NDRF, Delhi Fire Services, Delhi Police, Delhi Disaster Management Authority, Municipal Corporation of Delhi, Centralised Accident and Trauma Services and Civil Defence were deployed.
Two NDRF teams were involved in the rescue operation, while additional teams were kept on standby. Rescuers used specialised equipment and continued removing rubble to reach people who might have remained trapped beneath the debris.
Officials said several people had been rescued and shifted to hospitals. Medical teams at facilities including AIIMS Trauma Centre were also treating victims brought from the collapse site.
Students Feared Trapped Under Rubble
The building was reportedly home to students staying in PG accommodation. Local residents said the property had multiple rooms, with several students sharing accommodation.
The collapse sparked frantic searches by relatives and friends as reports emerged that people could be trapped beneath the rubble. Some individuals were reportedly able to make phone calls from underneath the debris, giving rescuers hope that more survivors could be reached.
The congested nature of the lane posed an additional challenge for rescue personnel and heavy equipment operating at the site.
CM Rekha Gupta Assures Strict Action
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta visited the site and monitored the rescue operation. She said the administration’s immediate priority was to save lives and ensure that trapped people were brought out safely.
Gupta said the building was old and that construction or renovation work had been taking place in the basement. She indicated that excavation may have affected a pillar before the structure collapsed.
The Chief Minister also warned that those found responsible would not be spared. She said action would be taken against anyone found accountable, including the building owner or officials if negligence was established.
An adjoining building was also evacuated as a precaution after concerns were raised about structural safety in the area.
Investigation Into Building Safety Begins
Delhi Police began the process of registering an FIR in connection with the collapse. Authorities are expected to investigate the building’s condition, construction activity, permissions and possible violations of safety regulations.
The incident has once again highlighted concerns surrounding old buildings and overcrowded PG accommodations in Delhi, particularly in areas heavily populated by students.
As rescue teams continued their efforts, the focus remained on locating anyone still trapped, treating the injured and determining the circumstances that led to the sudden collapse.
The tragedy has left families grieving and the student community deeply shaken, while authorities face growing pressure to establish responsibility and prevent similar building disasters in the future.
