A devastating fire at a major gas chemical complex in Russia’s Far East has killed seven people, including six Chinese nationals, while nine other Chinese workers remain missing, triggering a major emergency response and investigation into the deadly industrial accident.
Deadly Fire Breaks Out at Amur Gas Chemical Complex
The blaze erupted on Tuesday at the Amur Gas Chemical Complex in Russia’s Amur region. The facility, one of the country’s major planned petrochemical projects, was preparing to begin production when the incident occurred.
According to information released by the plant, seven people have died in the disaster. Six of those killed were Chinese nationals, highlighting the heavy toll among foreign workers employed at the large-scale industrial project. Nine additional Chinese workers have been reported missing following the fire.
The fire was subsequently brought under control and extinguished, according to the plant’s press service. However, the incident has left authorities facing a difficult search operation as emergency teams work to establish the whereabouts of those still unaccounted for.
152 People Treated After Massive Blaze
The scale of the accident became clearer as authorities reported that 152 people received medical treatment following the incident. Of those injured, 36 were taken to hospitals for further medical care.
An emergency services aircraft was also deployed to help transport injured workers to hospitals elsewhere in Russia, underlining the seriousness of the accident and the need for specialised medical treatment.
The latest casualty figures could still change as rescue and search operations continue. Officials have not yet disclosed the circumstances surrounding each death or provided a detailed account of the condition of all those injured.
Nine Chinese Workers Still Missing
The disappearance of nine Chinese workers has emerged as one of the most concerning aspects of the tragedy.
Search teams are working at the industrial facility to determine whether the missing workers are trapped inside damaged sections of the complex or were separated from colleagues during the emergency.
Reports indicate that Chinese workers were involved in construction and related activities at the facility. Foreign labour, including workers from China, is frequently used in Russia for large industrial and infrastructure projects.

Major Russia-China Petrochemical Project
The Amur Gas Chemical Complex is a joint project involving Russian energy company Sibur and Chinese oil and gas giant Sinopec. The facility is designed to become one of the world’s major producers of polyethylene and polypropylene.

The complex had not yet entered full-scale operations and was preparing for the launch of production when the fire occurred. Once operational, it is expected to produce around 2.3 million metric tonnes of polyethylene and 400,000 tonnes of polypropylene annually.
The project is strategically significant for Russia’s petrochemical industry and reflects growing industrial cooperation between Russia and China.
Russia Launches Investigation Into Industrial Safety
Russian investigators have opened a probe into the circumstances surrounding the fire. The Investigative Committee said it was examining the incident as a possible violation of industrial safety regulations.
Authorities are expected to investigate how the fire began, whether safety procedures were followed and whether any technical or operational failures contributed to the disaster.
The exact cause of the blaze has not yet been officially established. Investigators will also have to determine whether the incident was linked to equipment failure, construction activity or another safety-related issue.
Rescue Operation Continues After Fire Extinguished
Although firefighters have extinguished the blaze, emergency operations are continuing at the complex. The focus has shifted toward locating the missing workers, treating the injured and securing the affected area for investigators.
The tragedy has also raised fresh questions about safety standards at major industrial projects, particularly facilities involving hazardous gases, chemicals and complex production systems.
