NEW DELHI: Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday launched a sharp political attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, predicting that the BJP leader would not remain in office as Prime Minister a year from now. The Congress leader made the remarks while addressing concerns surrounding the alleged NEET-UG paper leak controversy and issues related to the CBSE examination system, both of which have triggered nationwide debate over the functioning of India’s education sector.
Speaking to students and party workers, Rahul Gandhi claimed that growing public dissatisfaction over repeated examination controversies could have significant political consequences for the ruling government. He argued that the trust of students and young aspirants had been severely shaken due to allegations of paper leaks, evaluation irregularities and administrative failures.
The Leader of the Opposition intensified his criticism by linking the NEET-UG paper leak issue directly to the Modi government. He alleged that the Centre had failed to safeguard the future of millions of students and accused the administration of not taking adequate responsibility for recurring examination-related controversies. Gandhi also renewed his demand for accountability from Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, questioning why action had not been taken despite mounting criticism.
Rahul Gandhi further alleged that the country’s examination system was facing a crisis of credibility. Referring to concerns raised over the CBSE’s evaluation process and the ongoing debate over its On-Screen Marking (OSM) system, he claimed that students were being forced to bear the burden of institutional mistakes. He accused the government of remaining silent on issues affecting lakhs of students and said the education system required urgent reforms.
The Congress leader’s comments come at a time when the NEET-UG controversy has become a major political flashpoint. The exam, taken by millions of medical aspirants, has faced allegations of irregularities and a paper leak, prompting calls for investigations and corrective measures. Gandhi has repeatedly accused the BJP-led government of failing to ensure transparency in the conduct of national-level examinations.
His remarks also follow a series of recent statements in which he questioned the government’s handling of educational institutions and entrance examinations. Gandhi has alleged that repeated glitches and controversies have undermined students’ confidence in the system and have created uncertainty for young people preparing for competitive exams.
The BJP has not accepted the Congress leader’s allegations and has maintained that the government is committed to ensuring fairness in examinations. The Centre has informed the Supreme Court that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is personally monitoring the response to the NEET-UG issue and the process related to corrective measures.
Rahul Gandhi’s prediction about Modi’s political future is expected to add a new dimension to the ongoing political battle between the Congress and the BJP. With both parties gearing up for upcoming electoral contests, the controversy over examination integrity and student welfare is likely to remain a key issue in the national political discourse.
